NetVirta, A Global Fit Technology Leader, Provides Planet-Friendly Solution for Outdoor Industry Brands Looking to Minimize

BOSTON (June 15, 2023) – NetVirta, the world’s leading fit technology provider for medical, retail and sports equipment brands, is targeting the $862 billion outdoor industry with a planet-friendly solution that can dramatically minimize returns. Verifyt®, NetVirta’s mobile 3D scanning app, takes a customer’s complete and unique body shape into account to recommend size in apparel and footwear with the highest degree of accuracy. By implementing Verifyt, outdoor brands can help customers get their size right on the first purchase, thereby minimizing carbon emissions and waste associated with returns.

Consumers simply scan themselves from the comfort of home using their own mobile device, a quick and easy process that takes less than 3 minutes from start to finish. Predicated upon NetVirta’s proprietary 3D body scanning app for medical professionals, the Verifyt app is the only smartphone solution capable of precision 3D scanning the body, feet, and head without special IR/LIDAR cameras, making it compatible with nearly all smartphones.

“With outdoor industry trade shows Outdoor Retailer Summer and OutDoor by Ispo taking place this month, sustainability is top of mind,” said Jeff Chen, founder of NetVirta. “Consumer returns continue to be a challenge in every retail product category, with about 72% of fashion returns being due to poor fit. And these returns do more harm to the planet than you might think – it’s estimated that only 50% of returned items make it back to brands’ physical or digital shelves to be resold, while the rest is either discarded or destroyed.”

Verifyt has been proven to recommend apparel and footwear sizing with accuracy greater than 88%. On average, NetVirta’s brand partners see an 80% decrease in fit-related returns for shoppers using Verifyt, and a 56% decrease in overall return rate. That means less landfill waste and fewer carbon emissions, making a significant positive impact on the planet.

Not only do returns harm the planet and impact a brand’s bottom line, but they also inconvenience the customer.

“The last thing an outdoor enthusiast wants to deal with is an ill-fitting jacket or pair of hiking boots right before they head out on their outdoor adventure. Verifyt technology addresses this issue by eliminating size uncertainty at checkout and improving the overall customer experience,” Chen continued.

Today, NetVirta is working with IMOTANA (custom soccer cleats) and has significantly impacted their return rate. While the industry standard return rate for online footwear brands is around 25%, IMOTANA maintains a return rate of just 5%.

Most recently, NetVirta launched a partnership with Victoria’s Secret, the number one intimates retailer in the United States, to help solve for one of the hardest to fit categories in apparel retail. Through this partnership, Victoria’s Secret enhances its bra fitting experience, giving customers personalized and accurate size recommendations for optimum fit and comfort.

About NetVirta:

NetVirta is the world’s leading fit technology provider for medical, retail and sports equipment brands, helping customers order the right size with precision 3D body scanning. Since its origins at MIT in 2008, NetVirta has opened offices in Boston and Singapore and has created the world’s only FDA-cleared scanning app, helping clinicians scan medical patients to create custom-fit orthotics and prosthetics. In 2019, NetVirta released Verifyt® to help apparel and footwear brands reduce returns and improve customer satisfaction and loyalty with personalized size recommendations. NetVirta works with some of the biggest names in retail, sporting equipment, and medical including Victoria’s Secret, Riddell, Orthomerica, IMOTANA and Tecnica, among others. RECCO Focusing on 40 Years of Outdoor Safety

Stockholm, Sweden – (June 15, 2023) – Founded in 1983, RECCO is commemorating 40 years of searchability and innovation in the search and rescue space. The RECCO system has changed drastically since its first iteration, but the brand’s mission has stayed the same — to make more outdoor enthusiasts searchable to rescuers, no matter the activity, location or season.

The RECCO system was created after founder Magnus Granhed was involved in the rescue operations after a tragic avalanche in Åre, Sweden in 1973, where one of his friends was buried. Frustrated by the primitive methods at the time for locating buried victims, the idea for RECCO was born.

His frustration after the accident motivated Granhed to start speaking with professional rescuers in the Alps to better understand how the search process worked in case of an avalanche: “I understood early that an electronic solution was the way to go,” he recalled.

Development started as part of an exciting research project at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology. Tests were carried out with professional rescuers such as Bruno Jelk, Head of Mountain Rescue in Zermatt at that time, and Beat Perren, founder of Air Zermatt. Their widespread knowledge and experience from hundreds of avalanche accidents provided valuable input to further develop the technology behind the two-part system consisting of a detector that sends out a signal and is used by professional rescuers, and the reflector that bounces back the signal and which is integrated in outdoor products. The first prototype was finalized in the early 1980s. In 1983, 40 years ago, the company called RECCO was founded.

The RECCO system offers a solution to quickly locate outdoor enthusiasts equipped with rescue reflectors. Both detectors and reflectors have been refined and improved over the years. The first detector, the R1, had a weight of about 44 pounds. Today’s detector, the R9, weighs about 1.9 pounds.

RECCO SAR Helicopter Detector – Broadening the market

In 2016, RECCO created another ground-breaking innovation. After several years of development, a helicopter-carried detector was introduced, designed to search large areas faster year-round. The same technique that had been used only for avalanche rescue is now used to locate people that are lost or in distress while participating in several outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, hunting or trail running.

The evolution from a winter to a year-round system has spurred additional investment in the testing and the introduction of new reflectors. Durability requirements are very different if you compare hiking shoes and ski pants, for example.

Development with focus on sustainability

Testing in the lab and the field has always been important for the development of the RECCO system, especially as the technology has broadened in scope from winter to year-round activities. There is also a strong focus and commitment to sustainability when developing new reflectors. Sustainability is paramount when choosing materials and production methods. In order to be a reliable partner for rescue teams worldwide, the development of user-friendly detectors will remain important in parallel with making more people searchable. These two elements remain as equally important today as they were 40 years ago.

To learn more about RECCO’s history and technology, check out this video for more information.

RECCO reflectors are integrated into outdoor clothing and equipment such as helmets, backpacks and hiking shoes from over 150 brand partners including Jack Wolfskin, Arc‘teryx, Helly Hansen, Patagonia, POC and more. For more information, please visit RECCO.com.

About RECCO

RECCO® advanced rescue technology makes outdoor enthusiasts searchable to rescuers in case of an avalanche accident or when lost in the outdoors. The technology builds on a two-part radar system. Rescuers carry RECCO® detectors that send out search signals which are echoed by RECCO® reflectors, carried by the user. RECCO® detectors are used worldwide at more than 900 ski resorts and mountain rescue organizations in 32 countries. RECCO® reflectors are integrated into select apparel, helmets, protection gear and boots manufactured by more than 150 leading outdoor brands. RECCO AB was founded in 1983 in Sweden and is owned by its founder Magnus Granhed and the publicly traded investment company Traction AB (listed on OMX Nordic Exchange Stockholm). LEKI Introduces First Ever Trekking Pole Made from Hemp, Focusing on a Future in Sustainability and Responsible Manufacturing

BUFFALO, NY (June 15, 2023) – LEKI, a leader in innovative skiing, trekking and trail running poles for 75 years, proudly introduces the Hemp One Vario, the first ever trekking pole made from sustainable organic material. The pilot program consists of 250 pairs of poles manufactured entirely by hand in Europe, with the hemp grown and harvested in the Swabian Alb region just a few miles from the LEKI headquarters in Kirchheim, Germany, and assembly conducted in LEKI’s own factory in the Czech Republic.

The entire concept of the pole is designed with the use of organic materials across multiple components from grip to shaft to basket. “The Hemp One Vario is the first pole that consistently pursues the use of organic materials as a replacement for aluminum and carbon,” says Matthias Hatt, CEO of LEKI. “With this project, we have taken a big step forward in developing sustainable technologies through fundamental research and we see a lot of development potential for the future.”

Raw hemp fibers are twice as strong as steel and hemp bends and mends approximately six times better than steel. The sustainable aspects of hemp are tremendous compared to other natural ingredients: it requires little water or land area and it nourishes the soil, enabling more secure and renewable harvests. While weighing slightly more than carbon and aluminum poles by just a few ounces, the Hemp One Vario’s sustainable properties and strength to weight ratio offset this and are groundbreaking in terms of responsibly replacing materials and components used in the traditional manufacturing of hard goods.

LEKI first introduced the Hemp One Vario at ISPO last month and won the ISPO Award 2023, quoting the ISPO Award Jury: “LEKI is embarking on an exciting new path with the Hemp One Vario. The consistent sustainable approach, incorporating regionally renewable raw materials, can be described as a flagship project. Such innovations enrich the outdoor market on its way towards a resource-efficient and more sustainable future.”

The Hemp One Vario will initially be sold this year as a limited series program through Globetrotter stores in Europe and will expand to distribution in the U.S. in summer 2024.

Hemp One Vario (MSRP: $275)

  • Shaft: 100% hemp fibers with resin
  • Grip: Core 25% hemp fibers / CorTec surface with natural cork content
  • Strap: 100% natural linen flax fibers (made in Germany)
  • Basket: 25% hemp fibers
  • Length: 110-130cm
  • Adjustment: SpeedLock Plus
  • Shaft Segments (2): 18/16 mm
  • Weight: 290g / 10 oz per pole

Outdoor Industry Association Launches Clean Chemistry and Materials Coalition to Guide Industry Away from Forever Chemicals

New member program, working group, and consulting service to support phase-out of harmful chemicals through scalable plans, supply chain solutions, and timely advocacy

BOULDER, CO (June 14, 2023) – A member-led collective and the outdoor industry’s catalyst for meaningful change, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) today proudly announces the launch of its new Clean Chemistry and Materials Coalition (CCMC), a comprehensive program, working group, and consulting service to provide OIA members with strategies, scalable action plans, and solutions for thoughtfully phasing out PFAS and other harmful chemicals from their products and guide members through complicated sustainability regulations across the country.

CCMC is designed to support outdoor retailers, brands, manufacturers, and distributors each in a way that’s unique to their product category and life stage. The central purpose of the program is to help OIA members balance financial and product management risks while eliminating and replacing materials, delivering transparency to supply chain, recycling, and emission disclosures. It will also inform members of future chemical and sustainability compliance laws and regulations that are likely to impact the outdoor industry.

“For the outdoor industry, the path towards phasing out forever chemicals includes finding safer replacement materials that don’t sacrifice performance,” said Kent Ebersole, President of OIA. “Recently, many leading outdoor brands have become committed to phasing out PFAS, and members like REI, Keen, and Patagonia are already supporting the cause by screening products for PFAS and eradicating toxic materials from their own product lines. With the new CCMC, OIA looks to catalyze even broader compliance by bringing the entirety of our industry to the forefront of this vital chemical phase-out,” added Ebersole.

“Our sustainability commitment has always been about balance as well as urgency, increasing the ability of our members to reduce harm, apply safe alternatives in the supply chain, and become a climate positive industry by 2030,” said Sarah Rykal, Director of Sustainable Business Innovation at OIA. “We are here to support members as they navigate and innovate on sustainability practices and continue to build consumer trust in, and loyalty to, their favorite outdoor brands and gear. For a problem of this nature, OIA is all in. We are investing in this program to share our collective resources and expertise so outdoor companies don’t have to invest in costly but valuable new sustainability measures alone.”

OIA will work to share execution plans in the form of legislative and technical resources, a roadmap of market and product restrictions by state, as well as complicated compliance timelines so that all members can comply with legislation with minimal impact and reduced risk to their hard and soft goods businesses. OIA members will also have access to CCMC technical and legislative experts for further consultation on custom approaches, including toolkits for testing thresholds, research on alternative materials, and critical information on how to identify and phase out harmful chemicals from the supply chain. Additionally, members are invited to participate in monthly working group discussions hosted by industry leaders and experts to learn more on driving existing and future strategies for chemical action. The member-led working groups will be set up to offer further guidance on crucial topics like ongoing supply chain management and testing, chemical testing labs and methods, templates, and talking points for engaging with suppliers, inventory management and disposal, consumer messaging, and marketing best practices.

“Whether our members are just starting out on the trail or cresting the summit to PFAS elimination or other sustainability measures, the CCMC is poised to provide timely, user-friendly information and ‘getting started’ insights for the industry at large,” added Ebersole. “Together we can create more sustainable practices to ensure the outdoor industry is successful for the health of business, people and the planet.”
