The Conservation Alliance Announces Three New Success Stories for 2020

Also announces a Public Lands Defense Fund Grant to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Southern Alberta Chapter (CPAWS) to protect public lands from being sold to private interests.

The Conservation Alliance, a coalition of companies committed to protecting wild places, announces three additional success stories for the 2020 calendar year with projects in Hunger Mountain, Vt., Klickitat Canyon, Wash., and Temperance Flat Dam, Calif. These public land victories add to the five additional successes from earlier this year from the following projects: Long Lake Land Exchange, Wallowa Lake’s East Moraine, Almond Ranch, Alder Creek, and Elk River Unit Acquisition.

The Conservation Alliance awarded grant funding to The Trust for Public Land for the Hunger Mountain Headwaters project, enabling the protection of 1,877-acres of public access to the Worcester Range through land acquisitions in Stowe, Middlesex, and Worcester, Vermont. The newly protected properties will increase public access to the Worcester Range, including acreage in the Worcesters to Northeast Kingdom Wildlife Linkage. This area is part of the C.C. Putnam State Forest and hosts approach trails to two popular day hikes, Hunger Mountain and White Rock Mountain. This protection not only secures scenic views, but also ensures the health of nearby forests, rivers, and wildlife.

Columbia Land Trust, a Conservation Alliance grantee, finished its Mt. Adams-Klickitat Canyon Conservation project, conserving 4,900 acres in Yakima County, Wash., the ancestral lands of the Yakama people. This success represents the final step of a nearly 11,000-acre conservation project which concludes more than a decade of planning, research, and partnership alongside the Yakama Nation, who offered their vision and support for conserving this land. The Mt. Adams-Klickitat Canyon Conservation project benefits recreation, wildlife, and habitat connectivity along the wild and scenic Klickitat River, and ensures that the area will remain wild and healthy for generations to come.

In 2018, The Conservation Alliance granted American Whitewater funding to protect 18 miles of the San Joaquin River in California, which was threatened by the proposed Temperance Flat Dam. As of today, the Temperance Flat Dam is indefinitely on hold due to the high project costs and permanent damage that it would cause to the landscape, wildlife, and delicate habitat has been averted. Over 85,000 people visit the San Joaquin River Gorge every year to enjoy its outstanding scenery, use its extensive trail system, paddle the river’s rapids, and camp in public campgrounds.

“With the Temperance Flat Dam on hold, it marks the 36th dam that Conservation Alliance grantees have helped stop or remove,” said Alie Kouzoukian, Communications Manager of The Conservation Alliance. “This segment of the river was identified in 2014 by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to be added to the Wild and Scenic Rivers System, but the dam proposal halted the protection effort. The path is now clear for continued efforts to designate the San Joaquin River Gorge as Wild and Scenic, and permanently protect the remarkable cultural, recreational and natural wonders found within this spectacular gorge once and for all.”

In addition to these three success stories, The Conservation Alliance has also announced a $25,000 grant from the Public Lands Defense Fund to Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Southern Alberta Chapter (CPAWS) to address a new proposal by the Government of Alberta to close 40-percent of Alberta’s provincial parks (175 park units), which accounts for about 40,000 acres and includes 4,493 public campsites. The Government of Alberta stated they are interested in transferring (selling) these public lands to private interests. CPAWS will use the Public Lands Defense funding to ensure all parks threatened by this proposal are kept within the park system, while also ensuring public park lands are not sold or transferred without formal public input.

Since inception in 1989, Conservation Alliance funding has helped save more than 73 million acres of wildlands; protect 3,575 miles of rivers; stop or remove 36 dams; designate five marine reserves; and purchase 17 climbing areas. To read more about all of these successes, please visit: https://www.conservationalliance.com/success-stories/.

Since its inception in 1989, The Conservation Alliance has contributed more than $24 million, awarded 720 grants, helped to protect more than 73 million acres of wildlands and 3,575 miles of rivers; stop or remove 35 dams; designate five marine reserves; and purchase 17 climbing areas. Good To-Go Launches Two New Meals in Time for Fall

Travel to Cuba and Vietnam with Chef Jennifer’s Culinary Creations

Created to elevate expectations of what prepared meals can taste like, Good To-Go is launching two new dishes, just in time for the crisp days of Fall (and WFH lunches)—Chicken Pho and a Cuban Rice Bowl. These delicious Cuban and Vietnamese staples offer a culinary experience unlike any other packaged meal. Using healthy, recognizable and pronounceable ingredients, the Chicken Pho and Cuban Rice Bowl deliver the fuel needed to get through whatever adventure or task lies ahead. Both meals will be available through Good To-Go’s website and retailers in single and double servings starting September 9, 2020.

These two new recipes, connecting diners to different corners of the world, came from multiple points of inspiration:

“On a month-long trip to Vietnam in 1998, my partner/chef Anita Lo and I fell in love with the country’s Pho,” said Chef Jennifer Scism. “We would go from town to town searching out the best. My favorite memory was that Pho was often served for breakfast…noodles for breakfast? Yes please!”

CHICKEN PHO
VIETNAMESE CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

This popular street food is known the world over for its comforting affects. The steaming, savory and immensely aromatic broth is the foundation of this restorative dish. Notes of cinnamon and star anise, followed by fresh ginger and clove keep it authentic. Braised chicken thighs, cabbage, scallion and cilantro provide the additional sustenance needed for any adventure.

“While living in NYC, I became obsessed with a little Cuban restaurant on 8th street near NYU,” said Scism. “It was the first time I had had a Cubano sandwich. From that point on, I began my search for the best Cuban food. Little dives in Florida gave me more insight into the culture and the food, but who would think my adopted hometown of Kittery, Maine would have one of the best Cuban takeout joints? La Casita, the little orange and blue shack on the traffic circle, puts out some of the best Caribbean food I’ve ever had, and my Cuban Rice Bowl is homage to their delicious rice and bean dishes.“

CUBAN RICE BOWL
BLACK BEANS, PLANTAIN AND RICE WITH GARLIC CREMA SAUCE

Big, bold flavors with a balanced spice take this rice bowl to new heights. The combination of rice and beans creates a complete protein—providing you with all the amino acids you need to go that extra mile. While this meal is vegetarian, even the hungriest of carnivores will appreciate the 15g of protein per serving. Garlic crema sauce and plantains create unique flavors you’ll find in no other camp meal.

In 2020, Good To-Go is also launching updated packaging across the line, with these two new additions offering the first peek at the new format. Larger callouts help adventurers choose the right meal(s) based on calories, protein and other dietary preferences while the vibrant colors and icons reminiscent of Maine and the outdoors remain.

Good To-Go was founded by Jennifer Scism, an award-winning chef and long-time co-owner of Annisa, a nationally recognized restaurant in New York’s Greenwich Village, and David Koorits, an outdoor enthusiast who has spent his career as a wilderness therapy counselor, ski patroller, wildland firefighter and nurse. Scism’s career has long been focused on the importance of good food. She has cooked at NY Times 4-Star rated restaurants, traveled to over 20 countries studying regional foods, and along with her team from Annisa, beat Mario Batali on the TV Food Network’s Iron Chef program. Started in 2014, a time when the market was craving something tastier and healthier, Good To-Go has won multiple outdoor industry awards and start-up competitions, while they continue to add people-power and production space to address demand. Today, the brand’s dehydrated gourmet meals are sold in over 700 stores nationwide and in Canada. More info can be found at www.goodto-go.com. NatureTrack Film Festival Going Virtual – Tickets on sale now

NatureTrack Third Annual Film Fest Expands to Ten Days for First Online Edition

October 9 – 18

(Los Olivos, CA)  Dozens of documentaries and short films from 21 countries, in both live and animated form, will be screened virtually at the third annual NatureTrack Film Festival (NTFF). From exhilarating and adrenaline inducing, to wonderous and spectacular, from heart-breaking to hope-filled, discover inspiring stories from passionate filmmakers about the world we live in and share with the other animals on earth. Save the second week of October (10/9-10/18) for a film festival delivered to your home – the safest environment for our patrons during the Corona virus pandemic. All tickets previously purchased for the festival in March will be honored.

Festival directors are saddened to have to cancel the live three-day event and move to a virtual-only festival, but given the current crisis, it is the only way to share all the incredible films. NTFF founder Sue Eisaguirre said, “In 2021, look for NatureTrack Film Festival ON TOUR, and in 2022 we will be back in person. We look forward to making our beloved town of Los Olivos pop in a most festive way and to celebrating the filmmakers whose passion leads the way.”

In the extreme adventure film By Hand two Pismo Beach brothers paddle by hand from Alaska to Baja, unaided by anyone else, just the Higginbotham twins in a coming of age story with nature as their mentor. No motors to propel them, no support boats, their custom-made boards carried everything, and they paddled more than 2,000 miles with only director Kellen Keene’s camera keeping them company.  By Hand has been scooping up awards at film festivals this year; you don’t want to miss what many are calling this year’s “Free Solo.”

The Lost Kings of Bioko by Oliver Goetzel, whose films have taken awards at the first two NTFF events, returns with another endangered species in his lens, one of the world’s least-known primate species, the Drill Monkey. Off the coast of Central Africa lies Bioko, an isolated island covered by ancient rainforests and surrounded by dark ocean waters. Island folklore tells of a Drill king who ruled the island’s forests, a place where Drills still play a critical role in the health of an ecosystem known to scientists as a biodiversity hotspot. The film takes on subjects most of the world is unaware of in Goetzl’s quest to create a brighter future for the Drills through science and, most importantly, species protection. Oliver also created “Making of Lost Kings of Bioko,” a special behind-the-scenes bonus short just for the NatureTrack Film Festival.  This twofer is a must-see.

Another past NTFF award-winner, Matthias Mayr, goes to the Arctic’s northernmost mountain range in the world for his  83° Ski the North.  Joined by adventurer Hauni Haunholder the two set off to ski the Arctic Cordillera and as the saying goes, “it’s the journey not the destination” as the men encounter major athletic and filmmaking challenges. The Ellesmere Island location is home to arctic wolves, polar bears and native Inuit people who actively support the intrepid mountaineers.

Bringing the personal story of Madame Kokoly to the NTFF, U.K. filmmakers Garth Cripps and Paul Antion capture a wide-angle look at the world’s marine environment through the close-up story of a traditional Vezo fisherwoman in Madagascar. Living in extreme poverty, Madame Kokoly reflects on her personal losses and life experiences, and the ocean she fishes which is changing beyond her control. Female only voices are represented in this heartbreaking film. Kokoly is a short documentary film, produced by Blue Ventures, and supported by Stories of Change, a project of the Sundance Institute, with support from the Skoll Foundation.

Getting down and dirty, Threats in the Northern Seas director Jacques Loeuille from France brings light to silent and deadly underwater witnesses from WWI and WWII – three billion tons, yes tons, of chemical and conventional bombs that lie at the bottom of the North and Baltic seas. Loeuille’s film examines the underwater stockpile of lethal munitions and takes on the cause of defending the survival of our vital oceans and seas. Why were these weapons dumped and are these massive watery caches of highly toxic ordnance an avoidable disaster? Sue Eisaguirre says she has discovered that NTFF patrons are “proactive people for our natural world, and this film will educate you about the dangers and natural disasters caused by climate change.”

Find out about these and more films at the website and get ready to immerse yourself in a selection of documentaries that speak to the passion of the NatureTrack Foundation.

PrimaLoft® Bio™ To Launch with over 15 Brand Partners this Fall

PrimaLoft, Inc., the leader in advanced material technology, is partnering with more than 15 outdoor sports, fashion, lifestyle and home furnishing brands to introduce PrimaLoft® Bio™ to consumers, this fall. PrimaLoft Bio is the first biodegradable*, 100% recycled synthetic insulation and performance fabric.

“The prevalent use of plastic in our society has a huge impact on our environment because of its inability to break down over time,” says Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. “PrimaLoft Bio has been specifically designed to biodegrade* in the environments where most plastics eventually end up: landfills and ocean water.”

PrimaLoft Bio is comprised of high-performance fibers that are made from 100% recycled materials (mainly plastic bottles) that biodegrade* in specific environments such as landfills, oceans, and wastewater. At the same time, insulation and fabric made from PrimaLoft Bio fibers provide the same high-quality, durable performance as products with virgin polyester fibers – providing lightweight warmth and comfortable protection for a variety of activities and weather conditions.

Additionally, PrimaLoft Bio fibers are renewable in a circular economy as it’s possible to rejuvenate the fibers into new high-performance material, repeated time and again, without any loss in quality.

When PrimaLoft Bio is exposed to oceanwater, wastewater or landfill environments, naturally occurring microbes break down the fibers to their natural elements, without leaving behind any harmful waste. The fibers will be transformed over time into water, CO2, methane, biomass and humus – a common component of potting soil. And PrimaLoft Bio will do so at a dramatically faster rate than standard polyester. In accelerated test conditions, PrimaLoft Bio fibers reach near complete biodegradation in under two years, while standard polyester remains almost completely intact. Additionally, PrimaLoft Bio insulation and fabric degrade only in these specific environments, as its fibers are highly durable. They will not break down during use, in the washing machine or in the closet – for the full life of the garment.

According to a 2018 UN Environment report, only 9% of all plastic that has ever been produced has been recycled, with roughly 79% ending up in landfills or the natural environment. Approximately 8 million tons of plastic enter into the world’s oceans, each year.

Joyce adds, “PrimaLoft Bio is an important step forward in providing sustainable solutions for microfiber pollution, throughout the entire life-cycle of a product.”

The unique technology has enabled an impressive group of outdoor sports, fashion and home furnishing brands to join the PrimaLoft Bio community in setting sustainability forward. The first styles with PrimaLoft Bio will be available to consumers in upcoming fall 2020 collections from brands like 4F, ESKA, Goldwin, Herno, Horsefeathers, Icebug, Jack Wolfskin, Klättermusen, Maloja, Namuk, Norrøna, Reusch, Roeckl, Ternua, Traumina and Viking. Other brands like Helly Hansen, Houdini, Montane and Rossignol will follow with their own styles, in upcoming seasons.

*93.8% biodegradation in 646 days under ASTM D5511 conditions (landfill environment). 76.6% biodegradation in 973 days under ASTM D6691 conditions (marine/ocean environment). 12.9% biodegradation in 120 days under ASTM D5210 conditions (wastewater environment). The stated rate and extent of degradation do not mean that the product will continue to degrade.

Hibear’s All-Day Adventure Flask Crushes Kickstarter Goal in 45 Minutes

Hibear’s 32 ounce All-Day Adventure Flask, the Swiss Army Knife of insulated bottles, crushed its funding goal within 45 minutes of launch on Kickstarter. Adventure travel needed a better bottle and Hibear has delivered exactly that. After two years of bolstering the Hibear community, meticulously perfecting the All-Day Adventure Flask, and receiving the fiercely sought-after 2020 Red Dot Design Award, the Hibear team experienced a huge influx of positive momentum approaching its crowdfunding launch date.

Hibear’s Founder, Mark Tsigounis says, “We couldn’t be happier with the results from the launch of our Kickstarter campaign and are beyond stoked. We couldn’t have done it without a community rallied behind us. A community built over two years, gathered around the principals of travel, adventure, and sustainability.”

Hibear’s versatile, insulated, easy-to-clean, and rugged utility bottle is designed to craft all your favorite beverages – from cold brew to cocktails – yet simple enough to use as an everyday water bottle. With 10 times the versatility of the average insulated bottle, the All-Day Adventure Flask encourages users to pack less and do more. Hydration is an essential part of outdoor adventure and day-to-day travel. Most bottles tend to fall short when it comes to crafting beverages on the go, especially when bag space is at a premium. The answer to that call is Hibear’s All-Day Adventure Flask.

“The All-Day Adventure Flask was specifically designed for the adventure travel community,” says Tsigounis. “It’s the type of functionality and eye-popping design that we needed out of an insulated bottle on our own adventures and receiving the Red Dot Product Design Award was the icing on the cake. It’s a great feeling seeing the team’s efforts paving the way for the future of Hibear because this is just the beginning.”

Hibear’s All-Day Adventure Flask (MSRP: $85) is available now for pre-sale on Kickstarter.
