On the Hill

Start advocating before getting to Washington, D.C.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is America’s premier federal program that ensures that we all have access to the outdoors. Whether it is a local community park or playground or the vast expanses of our federal public lands, Congress created the LWCF almost a half-century ago to guarantee America’s natural, historical and outdoor recreation heritage.  LWCF reinvests offshore energy revenue–NOT taxpayer dollars–in conservation.

You’ll have the opportunity to hear from agency, administration and elected officials during our education sessions, and build valuable relationships with your industry peers.

What should I expect while at Capitol Summit?

This event provides great insight into our government’s decision-making process in Washington, D.C. Attendees receive an introductory training on lobbying as well as education on OIA’s policy agenda and legislative priorities. We will serve as your guide to navigating the Hill and provide timely background information and training on the industry’s policy agenda, legislative priorities and members of Congress. Attendees will leave with a full understanding of how to schedule and conduct congressional meetings on the Hill as well as tools and skills to take home and make an impact in your state.
Why is Capitol Summit important to your business and the industry?

Capitol Summit builds the outdoor industry’s relationship with Congress by discussing our business issues and their related decisions, face to face. After each Capitol Summit, leaders in Congress champion our issues, sign on to sponsor and co-sponsor relevant legislation, circulate our legislation to their peers and across the aisle, attend Outdoor Retailer and arrange tours of companies’ facilities in their home state. Capitol Summit has direct results at engaging Congress in the outdoor industry.

Why your voice matters. Watch now.

“Once elected, our senators, representatives and administration depend on public input to make informed decisions. Human powered recreation on public land is as American as apple pie. We take it for granted; yet with the pressure of well-funded interests that expound values that run counter to the ethos of outdoor recreation, we need to make sure the benefit of wild places are heard. We all have a personal connection to a special place that influenced our view of the world. Gently reminding our public servants of this is one way I can give back to the land and animals that have shaped my life.”  – Conrad Anker, The North Face
