Astral ramps up brand communication efforts in partnership with Verde

SEATTLE (March  19, 2024) Astral, the industry-leading designer of high-performance outdoor equipment and apparel, has retained Verde Brand Communications to lead public relations and brand communications. Since 2002, Astral has earned a reputation for creating superior, unique and necessary equipment for wilderness athletes and explorers in a way that does the least possible harm to people, soil, and water. Astral has selected Verde to amplify its public relations and brand communications with the diverse media community.

Originating in Asheville, N.C. in 2002 with a focus on PFDs (personal flotation devices) for Class V whitewater kayakers, Astral evolved its product and community outreach to include river footwear in 2012 and trail footwear in 2017. Having endured and enjoyed the wild ride of the recent pandemic era, Astral grew to include an additional headquarters office in Seattle in 2020. The expanding brand and customer base has allowed Astral to consider agencies that well represent its strategies going forward, bringing the core brand to new markets.

“With a legacy of excellent PR performance with some amazing brands, coupled with a diversified perspective of employees ranging from Durango to LA to NYC and Seattle, we are really excited to align with Verde Brand Communications for our next seven-year chapter of expansion,” said Philip Curry, CEO and Head of Product for Astral.

Upcoming 2024 releases for spring and summer will continue to uphold the brand’s reputation for pushing the envelope around sustainable and high-performance designs. Astral recently expanded its industry-first bluesign® life jacket collection, with the release of the YTV 2.0™.  Forthcoming launches include more paradigm changing life jackets, footwear models and colors, as well as new lines of apparel that integrate less-commonly used textiles and fabrics.

“We’ve seen an ever-increasing trend of consumers gravitating toward brands that align with their values, and the fact that Astral has set sustainability on an equal footing with performance as guiding principles in its operation makes it a brand to pay attention to,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Verde Brand Communications. “We’re proud to partner with such an industry leader.”

Aztec Adventures announces 2024 race calendar and three-round gravel series

Aztec, N.M. (March 19, 2024) – Aztec Adventures has announced its 2024 off-road cycling event calendar, which brings mountain bike and gravel racing to San Juan County, N.M. Reliant on the energy sector for decades, the sandy washes and windy ridges surrounding Aztec and Farmington offer a scenic and challenging cycling arena easily accessible from a large portion of the Four Corners region.

The season kicks off on March 30 with the Roost the Ridges enduro mountain bike race supported by the City of Farmington. The family-friendly event begins at Lions Wilderness Park where riders begin an 8-mile-long untimed transfer into the Glade Run Recreation Area. From there, riders complete three timed downhill segments across flowing ridgeline terrain. The intermediate-level terrain makes Roost the Ridges a great choice for those who are new to enduro racing but also offers a challenging course for experts.

“I am excited to welcome racers back to the trails north of Farmington for the third annual Roost the Ridges enduro and Galactic Grinder this spring,” said Aztec Adventures founder Neil Hannum. “The leg-burning terrain at both races is quickly solidifying them as traditional spring classics for off-road cycling enthusiasts throughout the Four Corners.”

Switching to Gravel Bikes, Aztec Adventures’ three-race gravel series begins April 6th with the  Galactic Grinder that serves up three hilly gravel Orbits, transporting you into the outer atmosphere around the Alien Crash Site just outside of Aztec. Starting in Cedar Hill, the 35- and 50-mile routes quickly encounter a sharp climb into the ‘San Juan Alps,’ close to the New Mexico-Colorado state line. After traversing mesas and sandy washes, both routes filter into a 4-mile stretch of singletrack in the infamous Alien Run trail system before hitting some more punchy hills back to the finish. The 9-mile route offers a fun but challenging introduction to gravel riding and the terrain San Juan County has to offer.

Next on the list is the Gas Field Grinder on June 8th in Downtown Aztec. From there you will travel through the Aztec Jungle where time stands still in the sandstone canyons of Kiffen Canyon. Based on the north side of Aztec and located directly across the river from Aztec Ruins National Monument, the whole family will have something to do if they are not out racing on the 9-, 27-, or 50-mile distances. A Classic Cruiser ride is also part of the event if you want to show off the roots of mountain biking.

Rounding out the season is Holy Grit based out of Wines of the San Juan in Blanco. Riders will race along parts of the Old Spanish Trail where they can imagine the time when a route linking New Mexico to California, combining information from many explorers, was opened in 1829 when Santa Fe merchant Antonio Armijo led a trade party of 60 men and a caravan of mules to Alta, California.

Aztec Adventures encourages participants of all abilities to partake in its events–which show off its ethos of Go Fast, Go Slow, Just Go. Founder Neil Hannum has extensive experience exploring the area via bicycle and seeing what’s soon to be known as world-class cycling terrain. In 2021, Hannum joined forces with recent Fort Lewis College graduate William Farmer, his cousin Haden Cox, and the rest of Will’s extended family along with a small group of volunteers to create what are now mainstay events on the region’s cycling calendar. Often overshadowed by the famed trails and cycling community in Durango, Colo., San Juan County is a hidden paradise of mountain biking and gravel riding just waiting to be discovered.

Registration for Roost the Ridges and the Galactic Grinder is now open. Riders who register for all three gravel events receive 20 percent off of registration. To learn more about these events, please visit: https://aztec-adventures.com.

Outdoor Alliance celebrates 10 years of conservation wins achieved by uniting outdoor recreation voices

Washington, D.C. (March 13, 2024) — In the last 10 years, Outdoor Alliance has helped people who recreate outside under their own power become a unified and powerful political force — one that has protected 40 million acres of land and secured $5.1 billion in funding for public lands and waters. Through its work, more than 100,000 people have organized and advocated for better land, water, and climate protection, management, and funding.

Today, Outdoor Alliance released its 10-year anniversary report and anniversary video, which looks back at the last decade of “conservation powered by outdoor recreation.” It explores not just some of the biggest wins of the last decade, but how those were achieved — and it sets the stage for what this powerful and passionate political force can accomplish in the next decade.

“As a longtime partner, REI has witnessed Outdoor Alliance’s exceptional ability to navigate the complex landscape of outdoor advocacy,” said Taldi Harrison, Director of Community and Government Affairs for REI. “Their work, from passing major land protections to securing funding for the outdoors, has benefited the millions of Americans, including REI members, who get outside each year.”

Outdoor Alliance’s biggest achievement has been helping the outdoor recreation community speak with a single voice to garner greater power to advocate for the outdoors in Washington, D.C. A decade ago, political advocacy efforts were primarily carried out by sport. Hikers advocated around issues related to hiking, climbers around issues related to climbing, paddlers for paddling, cyclists for cycling, etc. Outdoor Alliance was formed to represent the political interests of 10 distinct member groups representing all different types of outdoor recreation. In 10 years, it has held more than 1,000 meetings with legislators and helped recreationists submit more than 626,000 letters and signatures in support of conservation- and recreation-focused legislation.

“Outdoor Alliance’s impact in the world of outdoor policy and advocacy cannot be overstated,” said Ryan Gellert, CEO of Patagonia. “Their team’s collective expertise has shaped legislation to protect public lands and waters, and ensure equitable access to outdoor spaces.”

The efforts of Outdoor Alliance and its constituent groups have resulted in land managers recognizing that outdoor recreation is one of the primary ways Americans come to know their public lands and develop a stewardship ethic. In response, its work has helped catalyze a shift in land-management agencies protecting more places for their recreation values — rather than for extraction or environmental reasons alone.

For instance, the Outdoor Alliance campaign to protect public lands from transfer or sale put the idea of “public lands” on the map for a generation, and has led to tens of thousands of new advocates better understanding outdoor advocacy and public-land policy. It has also helped secure a wide range of historic bipartisan legislative wins around conservation and recreation.

“In the realm of outdoor advocacy, Outdoor Alliance consistently stands out for their unparalleled acumen and effectiveness,” said Gabe Vasquez, U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 2nd district, and who previously served on the organization’s board. “Their team’s ability to bring outdoor recreation voices to policymakers and advocate for successful bipartisan conservation policy has earned them tremendous respect from lawmakers and the wider outdoor recreation community.”

Adam Cramer, CEO of Outdoor Alliance, said outdoor recreation has grown into one of the most powerful forces advocating for conservation.

“From our roots as a scrappy collective of whitewater paddlers, mountain bikers, hikers, climbers, and backcountry skiers, we have developed a powerful voice and presence in D.C.,” Cramer said. “We’ve visited the White House, testified in front of Congress, had hundreds and hundreds of meetings on the Hill to advocate for conservation, met with leadership at the Forest Service, Park Service, and BLM, and motivated many more outdoor enthusiasts to get in the advocacy game. Our collective voices — motivated by a connection to the places we recreate — have made a true difference in protecting land, passing great policies, and expanding sustainable access to the outdoors over the last 10 years. We’re incredibly excited about what we can achieve working together in the next 10 years.”

Outdoor Alliance is the only organization in the U.S. that unites the voices of outdoor enthusiasts to conserve public lands. A nonprofit coalition comprised of 10 national advocacy organizations, Outdoor Alliance’s members include American Whitewater, the American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, the Mountaineers, the American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, the Colorado Mountain Club, and the Surfrider Foundation. By working with its member coalitions and helping mobilize the involvement of individuals to protect public lands and waters, OA helps ensure public lands are managed in a way that embraces the human-powered experience.
