REDONDO BEACH, California (January 12, 2021) — Today, Body Glove welcomes professional surfer and filmmaker Hunter Jones to its athlete roster as the first of three new team additions to be announced soon. Jones is a creative and influential member of the surfing community with goals to help foster a diverse and inclusive environment for surfers.
“With this amazing opportunity I feel that I have a responsibility to be a role model to help inspire more diversity in the water,” says Jones. “When I was growing up, I didn’t have someone that looked like me that I could look up to. Even when I paddle out now on any given day at 45th Street [in El Porto], I’m the only one that looks like me. I want to help the next generation of surfers by creating an inclusive and representative environment in the water.”
Jones has previously worked with Color the Water and City Surf Project San Francisco, helping introduce youths and people of color to surfing through free lessons and programs. In this new role on the Body Glove team, Jones hopes he can continue these efforts through visual storytelling and more while inspiring the next generation of BIPOC surfers.
Jones’ passion for surfing was sparked at age 10 when his friend and friends’ father taught him at a local break in El Porto. Growing up in that area molded Jones into the beach-break surfer he is today and exposed him to key members of the surfing community at an early age.
“Being from South Bay and Body Glove being a South Bay brand, I looked up to and surfed with the guys who rode for the brand and wanted to be like them one day,” says Jones. “I even surfed with and personally knew the Meistrell family, who founded Body Glove, and it feels like I’m part of the family now with this new partnership.”
With this opportunity, Jones will wear Body Glove products in the water and on land in addition to creating branded content, assisting with product launches and partaking in team trips while formally representing the brand.
“Hunter is a natural addition to the team as he truly embodies Body Glove’s idea of creating happiness and doing what you love,” says Body Glove Marketing Director Nick Meistrell. “He caught my eye years ago as a diehard local surfer kid who was always going for it with a huge smile on his face. We are thrilled to finally have him join the Body Glove family and look forward to working together to showcase his talents and spirit.”
