Backcountry Partners with Utah Avalanche Center to Promote Snow Safety

PARK CITY, Utah (Dec. 7, 2023) Backcountry, the leading specialty retailer for outdoor gear and apparel, renews its long-term partnership with Utah Avalanche Center (UAC), an organization known nationally for its ‘Know Before You Go” program. The announcement coincides with the fifth annual Avalanche Awareness Week, established to promote avalanche rescue skills ahead of the snow sports season. This partnership dovetails Backcountry’s gear expertise with UAC’s educational expertise to help individuals be safer in the backcountry this winter.

“Backcountry’s heritage in avalanche safety traces back to 1996 when we made our first online sale with the purchase of an avalanche beacon,” says Colby Black, Backcountry CPO. “Our commitment to safety is in our DNA and we’re privileged to work with a renowned organization like UAC to empower the broader outdoor community with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions and enjoy the backcountry responsibly.”

Content creation will be a pivotal part of the Backcountry and UAC partnership, which will leverage Backcountry’s channels and build upon its library of videos that educate consumers on choosing the right gear before heading into the backcountry. UAC’s educational authority on practices in the outdoors paired with Backcountry’s knowledge of the right gear and offering will help produce a half dozen long- and short-form videos accessible across various channels. Backcountry will dedicate an episode of The Backcountry Podcast to avalanche safety and the UAC partnership, while additional videos will be published on its website, YouTube channel, and various social media platforms, covering topics such as “know before you go,” avalanche safety drills, how to pack your bag and more.

“Whether backcountry skiing or hiking a local mountain, avalanche awareness is critical,” says Chad Brackelsberg, UAC executive director. “Avalanches claim an average of 27 lives each year in the United States. In an effort to slash this statistic, it’s our job to partner with passionate organizations, like Backcountry, that align with our values and can help amplify our voice. We’re excited to extend our partnership and create new, premium content that can help better promote avalanche awareness and education to help people come home safely each day they are in the mountains.”

Proper education paired with the right equipment will best prepare outdoor enthusiasts for mountain excursions. Backcountry is home to hundreds of premium brand partners that offer the newest technology and top-of-the-line avalanche equipment, including shovels, probes, beacons, and airbags. Backcountry, along with its team of Gearhead experts, is equipped to help customers find the avalanche safety gear best suited for their individual needs. Costa Sunglasses becomes an official sponsor of the 39th Annual Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

JUPITER, Fla. (Dec. 7, 2023) – Born on the water and built for those who devote their lives to exploring it, Costa Sunglasses announces a new partnership with the Eddie Aikau Foundation, sponsoring the 39th Annual Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. One of the most revered big wave surfing events in the world, The Eddie celebrates legendary Hawaiian Eddie Aikau. A champion surfer and heroic lifeguard, Eddie completed 500 successful rescue missions, never losing a life until he lost his own in an attempt to save his fellow crew members on the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa after it capsized in rough seas.

The official Opening Ceremony of The Eddie is Friday, Dec. 8, at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaiʻi. The contest, held only when wave heights consistently reach 40-feet, has a waiting period from Dec. 14, 2023 to Mar. 12, 2024. The Eddie is at the heart of the global surfing community, and being invited to surf in the storied event is one of the greatest honors a big wave surfer can experience. Costa ambassador Mark Healey, who placed third in last year’s competition, will compete as a 2023 invitee.

For more than 40 years, Costa has been deeply connected to the watery world and the community of adventurers and explorers that come to life on it. Partnering with the Eddie Aikau Foundation is an opportunity for Costa to support the surfing community through The Eddie. Costa will be onsite providing invitees, alternates and event teams with sunglasses and gear from its Untangled™ Collection, gear built from recycled fishing nets. Water silos and reusable drinkware will be on hand as part of Costa’s Kick Plastic® Program, which helps to reduce the amount of single-use plastic finding its way into our waterways. And on Saturday, Dec. 2, Costa participated in a cleanup with the Eddie Aikau Foundation at Waimea Bay Beach Park in preparation for the Opening Ceremony.

“We strive to incorporate community into everything we do at Costa,” said Jed Larkin, Costa Brand Director. “The Eddie is more than a contest, it is a celebration of Eddie’s legacy and the big wave surfing community. We are incredibly grateful to the Eddie Aikau Foundation for bringing us all together through our shared love of the ocean.”

“We place a strong value on community service and supporting ocean-related activities and events here at the Eddie Aikau Foundation,” said Linda Ipsen, President of the Eddie Aikau Foundation & former wife of Eddie Aikau. “We recognize Costa’s unwavering commitment to these same ethos and welcome them on board. Our partnership has already extended beyond the event with help at the beach cleanup and with getting ready for the Opening Ceremony, and we truly appreciate their support.”

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational honors Eddie Aikau, who was the first lifeguard for the North Shore, home to notoriously dangerous waves. Passionate about Hawaiian culture and the movement to revive the lost art of Polynesian wayfinding, Eddie was selected to be a crew member of the double-hulled voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa. On Mar. 17, 1978, during Hōkūleʻa’s second voyage to Tahiti from Hawaiʻi, Eddie gave his life trying to save his fellow crew members when the sailing canoe capsized in rough seas. Through the surf contest and other activities, the Eddie Aikau Foundation helps keep his legacy alive and lifts up the importance of Native Hawaiian culture, sharing Eddie’s story and values with the world.

As outdoor recreation increases, Outdoor Alliance champions new legislation on public land management

Washington, D.C. (Dec. 6, 2023) — With recently released economic and participation data showing ongoing rapid growth in outdoor recreation, public lands need improvements and additional financial support to help manage those new levels of use, according to Outdoor Alliance (OA), a non-profit that works on behalf of the human-powered outdoor recreation community to protect public lands and waters. A first-of-its-kind package of legislation championed by OA and introduced in the House in recent weeks could foster some of those improvements, and voicing direct public support to legislators in December may help it pass.

Outdoor Alliance and its partners have been working for years to develop and pass a package of recreation policy to improve outdoor recreation on public lands and waters. In recent weeks, the U.S. Senate and House each have introduced complementary packages of outdoor recreation policy: America’s Outdoor Recreation Act (AORA) in the Senate and the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act in the House.

The public can help move this legislation forward by contacting their representatives in December to support it. Outdoor Alliance has established a quick-action form to help people send personalized letters to their lawmakers.

With a U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) report last month showing outdoor recreation in the U.S. generating $1.1 trillion in economic output (2.2% of GDP) and 4.98 million jobs — the largest numbers ever recorded and a more than 18 percent increase from the year prior — these bills take important steps to expand and improve outdoor recreation opportunities, according to OA and its partners, a coalition of nonprofits representing different types of outdoor recreation.

The highlights include the Biking on Long Distance Trails Act (BOLT) to identify and create more long-distance bike trails, the Protecting America’s Rock Climbing Act (PARC) to safeguard Wilderness climbing, the Simplifying Outdoor Access for Recreation Act (SOAR) that will improve recreational permitting for outfitters and guides, and permanent direction for the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership and FICOR.

“Millions of Americans get outside each year, and the EXPLORE Act will improve management for climbing and mountain biking, enhance how agencies manage outdoor recreation, and invest in parks where they are needed most with the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership,” said Louis Geltman, VP of Policy and Government Relations at the Outdoor Alliance.

Outdoor Alliance is the only organization in the U.S. that unites the voices of outdoor enthusiasts to conserve public lands. A nonprofit coalition comprised of 10 national advocacy organizations, Outdoor Alliance’s members include American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, the Mountaineers, the American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, the Colorado Mountain Club, and the Surfrider Foundation. By working with its member coalitions and helping mobilize the involvement of individuals to protect public lands and waters, OA helps ensure public lands are managed in a way that embraces the human-powered experience. Outdoor Research Releases Brand Film ‘Any Fool Knows’

SEATTLE (Dec. 6, 2023) — More than 40 years after the outdoor apparel and gear brand Outdoor Research (OR) was founded, many people who use the company’s equipment likely aren’t aware the degree to which the company’s name is so closely tied to the relentless mission of its founder, Ron Gregg.

In-depth field research on how OR’s gear performed in tough outdoor situations wasn’t just a reason why the company quickly made a name for itself back in the early 1980s. It was also what drove Gregg, a super-focused nuclear physicist turned outdoor entrepreneur, to repeatedly immerse himself in what he affectionately called “the big office” — the world’s most extreme environments.

It was in one of those environments that he died in an avalanche 20 years ago this year.

Outdoor Research brand ambassadors Mark Abma, Neil Provo, Ian Provo, and Zach Giffin traveled to Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park in British Columbia last winter to retrace Gregg’s steps on that trip. The project led to Gregg’s friends and family emerging from the woodwork to talk about his legacy. It also led OR’s ambassadors to a discussion on the value of and place for risk-taking  in backcountry sports.

What emerges is the short film Any Fool Knows — titled after a saying that Gregg’s family recalled him often repeating — which stands as a testament to the impact Gregg had on the people around him and the passion he had for developing the tools that help people enjoy the great outdoors.

“We originally envisioned this trip as a seasonal photo shoot with some of our ambassadors following in the footsteps of Ron 20 years after the avalanche,” said Chris King, VP of Brand at Outdoor Research. “But during the trip the events that took place began to really unfold in front of us, and we recognized there was a much more significant story to be told — both about risk-taking in backcountry sports, and about how Ron’s passion and drive are still informing what Outdoor Research does today.”

The film will be released on December 7 on Outdoor Research’s YouTube channel here.

Costa Sunglasses releases its Second Edition: Protect Report

Jupiter, Fla. (Dec. 05, 2023) – Born on the water in 1983, Costa Sunglasses has spent the past four decades on a mission to protect the watery world it calls home. Today, capping off its 40th anniversary year, Costa releases its Second Edition: Protect Report, which captures the leading eyewear brand’s ongoing commitment to conservation and sustainability. From building responsibly made gear, to its Kick Plastic® and OneCoast initiatives and strong partnerships with mission-aligned conservation organizations, Costa continues to lead the charge in pursuit of its higher calling.

Through the lens of community and conservation, Costa’s Second Edition: Protect Report captures its efforts throughout 2021 and 2022 – alongside its community of anglers, adventure-seekers, partners, retailers and pros – to protect our waterways and to conserve the life within. The report takes a deeper dive into:

  • Purpose-built products, like the Untangled™ Collection made from recycled fishing nets
  • Continued initiatives, including Kick Plastic® and OneCoast
  • Integrated programs, such as Trout Unlimited Costa 5 Rivers program and Costa Compete + Conserve in the bass space
  • International projects, leading the way with the Marlin Fly Project
  • Mission-aligned conservation partners, supporting 40+ coastal and freshwater organizations
  • Global sustainability goals, meeting all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

“We recognize the important role businesses can play in protecting and preserving our natural resources for future generations, and we take that responsibility to heart,” said Jed Larkin, Costa Brand Director. “We pride ourselves on working just as hard to protect our watery world as we do to discover new ways to experience it, and much like the first edition, this report takes that work and puts it into writing.”

Community and conservation is woven throughout Costa Sunglasses. The ultimate culmination of this ethos, and the leading story of the Second Edition: Protect Report, is Costa’s Marlin Fly Project. The first multi-partner program of its kind, the Marlin Fly Project was established to better understand one of the most incredible Striped Marlin fisheries in the world. Satellite tagging 15 Striped Marlin in Magdalena Bay, Mexico in 2022, the project became the first recorded billfish satellite tagging mission to be completed on the fly.

Also featured in the report is more about Costa’s sustainable products. In 2021, after getting feedback from pros and community, Costa worked with its partner Bureo® to release a second wave of performance frames to its Untangled™ Collection, frames built from recycled fishing nets. The four new performance frames – Santiago, Pargo, Antille and Caleta – are built from an upgraded NetPlus™ material made of 97% recycled fishing nets.

Costa has spent the past 40 years developing meaningful partnerships with dozens of mission-aligned organizations devoted to critical issues affecting our watery world. More than just writing checks, Costa’s team serves as partners, voices and stewards to support those who work to protect our resources. In 2021 and 2022, Costa supported 1,000+ community activations and used its resources, like film, to help raise awareness for these causes. Costa Films™, produced 25+ films in the same timeframe to underscore the brand’s values.

To explore Costa Sunglasses’ conservation and sustainability journey, the full Protect Report can be found here. For more information about Costa Sunglasses and its purpose-built products, visit www.costadelmar.com.

Tailwind Nutrition launches Chocolate Mint Recovery Mix benefiting Friends of CAIC

Durango, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2023) — Tailwind Nutrition, the leading provider of simple and complete sports nutrition products for athletes, has launched Chocolate Mint Recovery Mix, a seasonal, limited edition flavor of Tailwind Recovery Mix that benefits  Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (FoCAIC).

Chocolate Mint Recovery Mix is a limited run so once it is gone, it’s gone! What better way to spice up Tailwind’s fan favorite Chocolate Recovery than with the dynamic duo that is chocolate and mint! Get ready for another day in the backcountry while kicking your feet up by the fire and sipping on a taste of cozy.

“We are proud to partner with Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center for this limited edition flavor. Chocolate and mint are the perfect combination to help recover after a day of winter fun,” said Chris Jacobs, chief revenue officer for Tailwind Nutrition.

Tailwind Recovery Mix is the first recovery drink of its kind based on a “perfectly complete protein” with the right types and amounts of carbohydrates and electrolytes for a full and total recovery. The easy-to-use mix contains 3x more complete protein than whey protein isolate and 2x more than chocolate milk – which means more usable protein is going towards the damaged muscles that need it, instead of your kidneys, which don’t. In addition, Recovery Mix is completely vegan-friendly.

The launch of Chocolate Mint Recovery and partnership with FoCAIC highlight Tailwind’s increased efforts to educate winter sports participants about the importance of hydration and recovery–even when it’s cold outside. Staying hydrated and maintaining caloric intake at the resort and in the backcountry can help reduce fatigue, increase mental clarity, as well as help avoid negative reactions to altitude.  Tailwind’s individual single serving packets make its suite of products–Recovery Mix, Endurance Fuel, and Rapid Hydration– easy to stash in backpacks and pockets for easy access.

The Chocolate Mint flavor will be sold online at TailwindNutrition.com and is available in four-pack bundles for $10. The four-packs will be wrapped in paper rather than plastic, further contributing to Tailwind’s sustainability efforts.

About Friends of CAIC

The Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to support the CAIC, while contributing to avalanche awareness and education throughout Colorado. Since 2014 we have invested just over $2.4 million into avalanche safety. This money has funded Know Before You Go, developed avalanche safety videos and signage, created outreach for new and existing users, built new web and mobile applications, and supported the CAIC’s forecast operations.
