2020 DK Event Cancelled as a Result of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Life Time, the nation’s premier healthy lifestyle brand which owns and produces the Garmin DK, the world’s premier gravel event, today announced the 2020 DK, which had been rescheduled for September 12, 2020, has been cancelled due to persisting COVID-19 concerns. The decision to cancel comes after thorough input from community leaders and reviewing the latest scientific data trends on the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Our team has worked hard for many weeks to determine if an event could take place in Emporia this Fall and we have been in regular communication with local community and health leaders to determine our best path forward,” said Lelan Dains, DK Race Director at Life Time. “While we hoped that something could be done, if even with an altered capacity, we now realize the safest and most responsible thing to do for our athletes, volunteers, and community is cancel the 2020 event.”

Life Time is offering registered athletes their choice of four options. Participants have been requested to select their choice by August 7:

  • Complimentary deferral into the 2021 event (June 5, 2021)
  • Complimentary deferral into the 2022 event (June 4, 2022)
  • Donation of original entry fee to the Life Time Foundation (benefitting the Emporia Unified School District 253 school lunch program) and receive a guaranteed, non-complimentary entry into their choice of the 2021 or 2022 event
  • Full refund (excluding processing fees)

Danny Giefer, Mayor City of Emporia added, “The decision to cancel an event is never an easy one, and I appreciate the thought and work that Life Time has put into planning the 2020 race. While we are all disappointed the event can’t occur as planned, we can look forward to 2021 and a continued long-term relationship hosting the world’s premier gravel cycling race right here in Emporia.”

The DK team at Life Time is looking ahead with both reflection of the past and excitement for the future. With a promised new name, fresh look and a continued focus on growing the sport, the 2021 event is promised to be a first-of-its-kind experience for athletes, volunteers and community members. In addition to the rebrand, which is set to roll out over the coming months, Life Time is in the process of creating an event industry-focused diversity, equity and inclusion coalition.

Experts Urge Precautions and Protective Measures as Tick Season Hits Hard

Protection, education and awareness critical in mitigating the chance of contracting a tick-borne disease like Lyme disease

Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with approximately 300,000 new cases each year. With warm weather and COVID-19 restrictions driving people outdoors, protection with effective tick and insect repellent, as well as education and awareness will be crucial tools in order to stay safe and tick-free.

Ben’s® is an industry-leading producer of insect and tick repellent based in New Hampshire’s White Mountains where ticks are especially common. Ben’s line of repellents for skin, clothing and gear expands this year to include a tick-specific formula with Picaridin in time for tick season.

“At Ben’s, we believe that protection against ticks is the first line of defense in preventing ticks and tick-borne diseases,” says Katie Jones, brand manager for Ben’s. “This year we are proud to launch a tick-specific formula developed and tested in the harshest tick and insect conditions here in New Hampshire.”

Ben’s Tick Repellent 6oz Eco-Spray is an EPA-registered solution with CDC-recommended Picaridin for repelling disease-carrying ticks. The field-tested tick spray features a 20% Picaridin formula designed to repel ticks that may carry Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. Also in the Ben’s line of tick and insect protection, Ben’s® Clothing and Gear 24oz Spray repels and kills biting insects on contact with its 0.5% permethrin formula, turning clothing and gear into an extra layer of insect protection. Ben’s® Tick Repellent 6oz Eco-Spray (MSRP $9.49) and Ben’s® Clothing and Gear 24oz Spray (MSRP $15.99) are available for purchase on Amazon.com and select retailers nationwide.

“While protection is necessary, awareness and education are also imperative in order to stay tick-free when exploring outdoors. Leading tick resources like those offered by Dr. Thomas Mather’s team at the University of Rhode Island’s TickEncounter Resource Center (TERC) provide critical education tools to stay tick-free,” continues Jones.

TERC takes user-submitted tick data from nearly 10,000 people across North America each year as part of their TickSpotters program to develop the most useful tick education and prevention messaging for broader audiences specific to their location.

“Tick education is critical in knowing what type of ticks inhabit the places where you live and play and what you can do to prevent contracting a tick-borne disease,” says Dr. Thomas Mather, director of the University of Rhode Island’s Center for Vector-Borne Disease and TERC.  “With the help of TickSpotters, we’ve been able to listen to tick bite victims and respond to each one accordingly with a course of action. We use what we learn to design resources and messaging for the hundreds of thousands of people who check our TickEncounter website or social media channels.”

TERC encourages those spending time outdoors to be aware of its five TickSmart™ actions to remain vigilant, proactive and protected:

  • Know the kind of ticks active throughout the year where you live, and identify any ticks you find biting
  • Perform daily tick checks, especially checking below the belt for tiny nymph ticks
  • Turn play clothes and other outdoor clothes into tick repellent clothes
  • Treat your yard with tick-killing insecticides
  • Protect your pet with pest-control management products

PrimaLoft, Inc. and Fiberpartner Announce New Global License Agreement

Partnership expands application of PrimaLoft® Bio™ to new markets

PrimaLoft, Inc., the leader in advanced material technology, today announced a new partnership agreement with Fiberpartner, a global supplier of stapled fibers, technical yarns and plastics. This new licensing agreement allows for Fiberpartner to develop the use of Primaloft’s groundbreaking PrimaLoft® Bio™ technology in multiple new industries.

Fiberpartner CEO, Thomas Wittrup says, “We see an increasing demand for biodegradable polyester, and consider PrimaLoft’s technology to be a game-changer. The staple fibers produced with PrimaLoft® Bio™ from Fiberpartner will be developed to supplement regular polyester fiber for use in a variety of applications. Together, we can begin the journey towards a more sustainable world.”

PrimaLoft® Bio™ is made from biodegradable*, 100% recycled fibers that break down when exposed to specific environments – such as landfills, oceans and wastewater systems. PrimaLoft® Bio™ enhances fibers to be more attractive to naturally-occurring microbes found in these environments; in so doing, fibers are broken down at a faster rate, returning polyester to natural elements. These fibers maintain their structure throughout use, only biodegrading* when exposed to the naturally-occurring microorganisms found in landfills or marine environments.

Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft adds, “PrimaLoft® Bio™ is an important step forward in providing sustainable solutions for microfiber pollution, throughout the entire life-cycle of a product.  We are excited to begin this relationship with Fiberpartner and to bring this responsible technology to a multitude of industries.”

Granite Gear’s Perimeter Backpack Collection Celebrates Body Diversity in 2021

The outdoors should be a space for every body. As a member of the Outdoor CEO Diversity Pledge, Granite Gear continues to be focused on stepping it up with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Beyond building a diverse team of Grounds Keepers since 2017 and making sure BIPOC and LGBTQ are represented within the brand, Granite Gear seeks to provide body-liberating gear so that people of all shapes and sizes feel comfortable in outdoor spaces. Every person has a unique build, shape, and size. Their packs should fit accordingly.

The new ultralight, multi-day Perimeter Series is a step towards celebrating diversity, specifically body diversity, in the outdoors. The Perimeter 35 and 50 introduce an additional element in fine-tuning the suspension system to one’s body: Shoulder Width Adjustment with regular and wide settings along vertical daisy-chained webbing. When adjusting the torso height, simply choose which shoulder width and resecure the clip to the corresponding webbing anchor points on each side. The series also utilizes the patent-pending Re-Fit waist belt to wrap around your hips just right.

The Perimeter suspension system utilizes a durable spring steel rod outline to give the pack ergonomic form. The spring steel perimeter rod works in tandem with a PE board core to disperse weight effectively and also allows for secure anchor points for the shoulder straps to attach to.

“At Granite Gear, we’ve been known for our load carriage systems for decades. However, we’re also known for our commitment to promoting DEI, including body diversity, within our industry,” says General Manager, Rob Coughlin. “The Perimeter Backpack Collection can dial your torso size fit to the inch. Additionally, we’ve included a torso width adjustment coupled with our Re-Fit belt. These adjustments increase the Perimeter 35L and 50L’s ability to fit a wide array of body types.”

The Perimeter 35 weighs 3 pounds and the Perimeter 50 weighs only 3.1 pounds, each with a 40-pound load rating. Both packs feature 100D Robic nylon and 210D Robic custom nylon, bear canister capability to help wrap canisters securely, zippered compartment on the top lid flap for quick access, and another zippered compartment on the bottom for soft item storage. Available in Pine/Bourbon and Marina/Black colorways. The Perimeter 35 is available in Unisex and Women’s-Specific fit in size regular (MSRP: $199.95). The Perimeter 50 is available in Unisex fit in size Regular and Long, as well as Women’s-Specific fit in size Short and Regular (MSRP: $219.95).

“Not being able to find the gear we need to do the things we want to do sends a message that we aren’t being considered. This can be interpreted as ‘we don’t belong.’ A pack that accommodates our unique shapes and sizes is an invitation to adventure,” says Jenny Bruso of Unlikely Hikers.

Granite Gear’s Perimeter Series will hit retail shelves in Spring 2021. For more information, contact Julie Bacon at julie@hotskilletmedia.com or 603-978-5530.

First Descents Launches Nationwide Virtual ‘Out Living It Relay’ Race

First Descents, the non-profit that offers life-changing outdoor experiences to young adults living with cancer and MS, is hosting a virtual race this month to get more people Out Living It during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Out Living It Relay is a small group race that can be run anywhere with a goal to complete 20 or 40 kilometers within a 48-hour period. Funds raised will benefit Hero Recharge, First Descents’ new programming for healthcare workers on the COVID-19 frontlines.

Participants are encouraged to recruit friends, family and coworkers to build a team of relay racers. For the Full Relay, teams of eight will have the opportunity to collectively run, walk, or dance their way across a total of 160km over 48 hours. Each runner will be responsible for completing a total of 20km divided into 3 runs; one 10km run and two 5km runs, in any order. For the Ultra Relay, each runner from a team of four can divide up their distance however they like, as long as they total 40km.

“Like many other non-profits around the world, we’ve had to cancel several events in the wake of this global pandemic. But, the new Out Living It Relay is open to everyone, anywhere they are,” said Ryan O’Donoghue, Executive Director at First Descents.  “This is a fun way to add some socially distant adventure to the summer.”

While fundraising is optional, First Descents is challenging each participant to get 20 people to donate $20+ to their team’s Out Living It Relay fundraising page. These funds will help send healthcare workers on free outdoor adventures, like rock climbing, kayaking, rafting and surfing later this summer and fall, as public health directives permit.

“Putting our oncology and MS programs on pause was difficult for our team and community, but we’re thrilled and honored to provide healthcare workers on the frontlines of this global pandemic with the opportunity to recharge in wild places with their peers,” said O’Donoghue.

Participants will track themselves using Strava, and then post their runs from July 18th and 19th to the Out Living It Relay Strava group. To sign up for the relay or to make a donation to First Descents, visit the event page here.

FORLOH Launches Technology-Driven ‘Made in America’ Apparel Brand for Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Markets

For the first time in decades, premium technical apparel that’s made in America pairs with the best technology on the market thanks to FORLOH, a new direct-to-consumer hunting, fishing and outdoor brand that is launching July 3, 2020. In addition to unveiling FORLOH.com, the brand’s flagship retail store will open on the 3rd in Whitefish, Montana, the same city as its headquarters.

FORLOH was founded by a group of hunters, anglers and all-around outdoors-people who believe there is a better way. More than just building purpose-built outdoor apparel, more than doing it with the best materials, the people behind FORLOH also wanted to manufacture entirely in the U.S. Doing so not only facilitates jobs in America, it also creates a faster pipeline to bring the latest technologies in fabrics to market. Unlike its competitors who are manufacturing overseas, FORLOH has the ability to turnaround products within ten weeks, versus ten months or more.

In the process, FORLOH recruited the most experienced product designers in the industry, sought out the most advanced technologies and fabrics, and created new science-based camouflage patterns. And, FORLOH gear is 100% made in the U.S.A. — from sourcing of materials through to the manufacturing of the end product.

“A lot of people told me it wasn’t possible to build high-end, market-leading technical apparel in the U.S., but when people tell me things like that, I like to prove them wrong,” said founder Andy Techmanski. “FORLOH is here to show that it’s not only possible, it’s actually the better way.”

At its core, FORLOH is dedicated to enabling customers to forge deeper connections with the outdoors. The brand views hunting and fishing as more than pastimes; instead, they are a way of life, a legacy of harvesting wild-sourced game and communing with the great outdoors passed down from one generation to another. And a way to achieve a higher-quality life. FORLOH is also focused on protecting the future of hunting. As part of that dedication, it is also committed to helping get families outdoors together, so it made a commitment to delivering the same technology and product offerings in women’s and youth collections, in addition to men’s.

FORLOH uses a range of cutting-edge and proprietary textile technologies to improve performance in warmth or cooling, breathability and waterproofing. Through FORLOH’s connections with U.S. manufacturers, it has adopted and applied technologies from other industries such as NASA and auto to create unique performance characteristics. It is also applying those technologies in a way that looks at layers as a system that works together, toward the goal of improving things like breathability and weather protection.
