OUTDOOR RETAILER INTRODUCES NEW FORMAT WITH EXPANDED BUYER FOCUS BEGINNING IN 2024

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA – (August 16, 2023) – Outdoor Retailer, the leading U.S. business events for the $862 billion outdoor industry, will introduce a fresh format beginning in 2024. The updates were developed through industry feedback and based on evolving business needs and timelines, and include:

  • Launching a large-scale Hosted Buyer program designed to build direct relationships between brands and buyers at onsite events.
  • Reimagining and expanding the sourcing area into a new co-located Outdoor Design + Innovation show to provide more opportunities for source and supply exhibitors to connect with product developers and designers.
  • Introducing a simplified booth space plan and new pricing structure to support exhibitors.

All new features will roll out with Outdoor Retailer Summer 2024, taking place June 17-19, 2024, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The upcoming Outdoor Retailer Winter show this November 14-16, 2023, will be held in its existing format at the Salt Palace.

“The changes to Outdoor Retailer stem from ongoing, industry-wide discussions, and reflect our commitment to foster the right connections in the timeframes that best support product cycles and ultimately enhance business opportunities,” said Sean Smith, Outdoor Retailer acting show director.

“As brands have told us, they’re thinking differently about how to bring goods to market in this changing global economy, so it’s imperative we offer options to meet current market conditions. It also creates more opportunities for emerging brands and startups,” added Smith.

Buyer Programs

Through the Hosted Buyer program, qualified retail buyers will be provided with supported pathways to attend Outdoor Retailer. Buyers can apply for an opportunity to access available funds to offset costs of attending. Buyers interested in learning more can submit information here.

Starting next year, Outdoor Retailer is also introducing dedicated hours for both buyers and exhibitors. The first two days of each show will open with specific morning hours for buyers and exhibiting brands. After buyer hours the first two mornings, and for the full third day, the show floor opens to all attendees. Outdoor Retailer’s community traditions will continue with opportunities for media engagement, to learn at expert-led education sessions, to attend networking events, and support advocacy efforts.

“It’s great to see Outdoor Retailer shifting their dates, formats and business model as the industry continues to emerge in the post-COVID world. The whole world has changed, and the trade show also must evolve so retailers can best see brands and trends, meet with brand management and marketing teams, network and discover emerging brands. It’s all about the future,” said Peter Sachs, general manager, LOWA Boots LLC.

Outdoor Design + Innovation

In 2024, an enhanced sourcing area will debut as the new co-located Outdoor Design + Innovation show. Outdoor Design + Innovation will run side-by-side with Outdoor Retailer in the Salt Palace over the same dates with separate registrations. Exhibitors include domestic and international suppliers of raw materials, along with businesses delivering current technologies in manufacturing and sustainability across the supply chain.

Booth Options

Both Outdoor Retailer and Outdoor Design + Innovation will offer a simplified way to exhibit starting in 2024. New booth space options, including a pre-built turnkey space, will be capped at a maximum size. And each space option will be available at one of two rates – early bird or standard.

“The Outdoor Industry Association, through our partnership with Outdoor Retailer, is working to catalyze meaningful change by delivering education and insights to lead the outdoor industry into the future. At Outdoor Retailer, we have the opportunity to connect with our peers and collectively innovate a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous industry,” said Kent Ebersole, president, Outdoor Industry Association.

Show Timing

The upcoming Outdoor Retailer Winter show, this November 14-16, 2023, will be held in its existing format in the Salt Palace. The Summer and Winter shows are now at the beginning of the respective seasonal sales cycles. The Summit by Outdoor Retailer, now alongside Winter Sports Market, provides more business opportunities and bolsters the winter buying calendar.

“Winter Sports Market fully supports this new Outdoor Retailer format and the dedicated attention to building stronger buyer and vendor relationships. The new dates better support the buying timeline and establishes a more efficient selling season. We’re looking forward to having Snowsports Merchandising Corporation and Sports Specialists Ltd. working together with Outdoor Retailer to serve the industry’s needs,” said Gary Fleming, president of Snowsports Merchandising Corporation.

Brands interested in getting involved at future shows with Outdoor Retailer or Outdoor Design + Innovation through exhibiting, experiences, advocacy programs, sponsorships, speaking, and more can contact an Outdoor Retailer account executive.

Keegan Swenson Dominates at the 2023 Stages Cycling Leadville Trail 100 MTB Produced by Life Time, Smashing the Course Record by More Than 15 Minutes

Leadville, Colo., (August 12, 2023) – The 2023 Stages Cycling Leadville Trail 100 MTB race, owned and produced by Life Time (NYSE: LTH), witnessed history with defending champion Keegan Swenson’s dominating performance, in which he broke the course record by 15 minutes and four seconds. The new official course record time is 5:43:31 for the famed ‘Race Across the Sky’. Sofia Gomez Villafane finished in first place in the women’s race, leading most of the day in a close battle with second place finisher Ruth Winder and third place Alexis Skarda.

On Saturday, a field of more than 1,750 riders descended on Leadville, with cyclists pedaling 105 miles and 12,000 feet of elevation gain, including tackling the challenging Columbine Pass, the high point of the race at 12,500 feet above sea level. Riders ranged in age from 18 to 80 years old, representing all 50 states and 25 countries, 59 of which were Leadville citizens proudly representing their hometown. Additionally, 70 Lead Challenge athletes toed the start line on Saturday.

“I was so short of the record (last year), so this year I just went all in, and if I blew up in the end, I blew up,” said Swenson.“I didn’t want to just get the record by a few seconds, I wanted to make it mine. I just put my head down and gave it everything I had on my way back from Columbine. The conditions were good, the course was fast and tacky, there was a little bit of wind and some rain, but the boys were rolling and everyone was down to ride.”

When asked about when he broke open his lead, which resulted in a solo finish 21-minutes faster than his nearest competitor, Swenson recalls, “About a third of the way up Columbine, I knew the pace I had to ride and that was it.”

La Sportiva Strengthens Its Strategic Positioning by Acquiring Meet Italia

ZIANO DI FIEMME, ITALY (August 11, 2023) – La Sportiva, makers of the world’s finest mountain gear, announced today that it has acquired a majority stake in the Veneto-based company Meet Italia, a manufacturer specialized in the production of Made in Italy mountain footwear. This move consolidates a strategic partnership that has been in place for over twenty years and will help La Sportiva bolster its domestic production capabilities. The brand is committed to producing products in Italy and makes a wide range of items at its factory in the Val di Fiemme, a beautiful valley in the Dolomites where the company was founded.

“The decision to acquire Meet Italia is strategic for us because it allows us to remain in Italy and strengthen our range of unquestionable quality,” said Lorenzo Delladio, president and CEO of La Sportiva. “I want to give special thanks to the Morellato family, with whom I have worked for 25 years. We are aligned in our values and share a deep love for these products and the sports they are made for.”

La Sportiva has been able to continue making products in Italy by increasing investment in its Italian factory and by developing partnerships with other manufacturers in the region. In recent years, the growth in demand for La Sportiva products has challenged the brand’s domestic production capabilities. The increased interest in the company’s high-end climbing shoes has been particularly difficult to accommodate.

La Sportiva is adapting to this demand by expanding its investment in the Zano di Fiemma plant and growing its production capacity by acquiring Meet Italia. Meet Italia was a natural choice, as the two brands have a long history of collaboration. Additionally, Meet Italia can guarantee exceptional quality standards that other manufacturers cannot, ensuring that La Sportiva’s products continue to meet the needs of mountain athletes across the globe.

Due to the timeline of these new investments, improvements to the supply schedule will be visible in the second half of 2024. With the start of the sales campaign for these seasonal orders occurring soon, La Sportiva’s sales department is taking steps to communicate the precise impact of these improvements.

ROKA Renews Partnership with Olympic Gold Medalist Gwen Jorgensen

Austin, Texas (Aug. 10, 2023) – ROKA, a leading performance design brand that creates and manufactures eyewear and technical apparel for lifestyle and competitive endurance athletes, announced today the re-signing of Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Champion, Gwen Jorgensen. Jorgensen returns to triathlon after taking several years off to start a family and pursue a lifelong goal of running professionally. In this Olympic cycle, Jorgensen is laser focused on bringing home gold for the USA in the Mixed Team Relay, an exciting event that recently debuted at the last summer Olympics in Tokyo.

“I partnered with ROKA for several years while I pursued the 2016 Olympic gold medal in triathlon,” said, Jorgenson. “We remained friends while I shifted my focus to competitive running and my husband and I added two boys, Stanley and George, to our family. I am grateful and excited to once again team with ROKA as I set my sights on the 2024 Paris Olympics.”

Jorgensen is one of the most decorated triathletes of all time. Since 2010, Jorgensen has won 25 gold medals and earned 37 podium finishes in International Triathlon Union (ITU) competitions. She also holds multiple ITU triathlon records including a world title win after an undefeated World Triathlon Series (WTS) season and a 12-race WTS winning streak. Other highlights in her career include being the 2015 WTS World Champion, the 2016 Mixed Team Relay World Champion, and the 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist. Jorgensen announced her transition to running following her gold medal win at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Following her return to triathlon, Jorgensen has quickly earned her way back into the ITU World Triathlon Championship series which allows athletes to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. A fierce competitor on the racecourse, Jorgensen credits her young sons with giving her perspective on navigating the highs and lows that come with rebuilding herself physically and mentally to once again perform on the world stage. A role model for all athletes, Jorgensen hopes to teach her own children to follow their passion by continuing to follow her own.

“ROKA is incredibly excited to help support Gwen’s return to triathlon,” said Rob Canales, CEO and Co-Founder of ROKA. “When Gwen stepped away, she was unequivocally one of the most dominant Olympic-distance triathletes in history. Most athletes would have been satisfied with that, so I give Gwen a tremendous amount of credit for thinking bigger, setting new goals, and having the courage to pursue a team title for our country in the next Olympics even if it puts her legacy in jeopardy. The road back to triathlon has already been bumpy for Gwen, but what distinguishes her from the rest of the pack is her ability to methodically focus on the process before the result. We’re proud to pick up our partnership with Gwen where we left off, and will be by her side every step of the way.”

California’s Sacramento River Rail Trail and Trail Inducted into Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Hall of Fame

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), the nation’s largest trails advocacy organization, today announced that California’s Sacramento River Rail Trail and Sacramento River Trail will be inducted to its iconic Hall of Fame.

Nestled beneath the Cascade and Trinity mountains, the trails provide 21 miles of transportation and recreation along California’s largest river. The trail pair was selected for outstanding merits, including RTC’s expanded eligibility criteria this year, which prioritizes multiuse trails that deliver exceptional accessibility and user experience, and contributions to the connectivity of regional trail and active transportation systems.

“Across the country, connected trail systems are proving their significance as essential community assets—creating safe space for people to be active outside, connecting neighbors and neighborhoods, and creating more transportation and mobility options for entire regions,” said Ryan Chao, president of RTC. “This year’s Hall of Fame nominees were examples of exceptional trails that are fundamental to our vision of a future where trails connect everyone, everywhere. The Sacramento River Rail Trail and Trail stand out by illustrating the impact of connecting trails in ways that provide opportunities for recreation, transportation and intimate connections to the history and nature steeped in place.”

Once serving as a travel and trade route for indigenous peoples, then later by a subsidiary of the Central Pacific Railroad, the Sacramento River Rail Trail and Sacramento River Trail provide opportunities for the community to be active, access the outdoors, and connect to neighborhoods and destinations in and around the City of Redding, including the Shasta Lake Recreation Area and the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The trails also serve as a backbone for a developing regional trail system that encompasses more than 250 miles and will eventually stretch from the Shasta Dam to Redding’s southern neighbor, Anderson, and beyond.

“We are excited to share with the world that the Sacramento River Rail Trail and Trail are indeed Hall of Fame worthy. We are grateful for our many partners who have collaborated on the development and expansion of the trails and our many users and support organizations who make the trails better every day. We invite you to visit and experience these world-class trails and scenic river,” said Kimberly Niemer, director of community services for the City of Redding.

The trails are home to the Sundial Bridge, an awe-inspiring feature that links both sides of the Upper Sacramento River. The 700-foot-long, cable-stayed, glass and steel working sundial spanning the Sacramento River attracts an estimated 100,000 global visitors each year.

The bridge, park and Redding’s vast network of trails—built in phases over the past three decades—have helped transform the region. The vast regional system of trails is a product of a partnership managed by the City of Redding, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service with the support of local groups, foundations, other agencies and community members.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Redding and other groups in managing these trails that improve the quality of life for residents of our area, while offering destination-worthy opportunities for outdoor recreation,” said Jennifer Mata, manager of the BLM’s Redding Field Office.

The trail pair was among three nominees voted on by the public between Jul. 31 and Aug. 7, 2023, securing nearly 48% of the vote. The Sacramento River Rail Trail and Trail duo is the 37th inductee in RTC’s Hall of Fame, joining an exemplary list of trails recognized for their outstanding scenic value, use, amenities, historical significance and community benefit. More than 30,000 votes were cast in the 2023 Hall of Fame contest. The other nominees were the Hennepin Canal State Trail in Illinois and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail network in South Carolina. For more information about the Hall of Fame, visit railstotrails.org.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is the nation’s largest trails organization—with a grassroots community more than 1 million strong—dedicated to building a nation connected by trails, reimagining public spaces to create safe ways for everyone to walk, bike and be active outdoors.
