Campaign asks voters, outdoor businesses and their customers to use OIA’s new 2018 Voters Guide to inform them about electing leaders in the mid-terms who support the $887 billion outdoor recreation economy and its 7.6 million American jobs
BOULDER, Colo. – October 10, 2018 – The 2018 midterm elections are nearly here and Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is urging every American who loves the outdoors and outdoor industry businesses to create a social media storm starting on October 15 and continuing until the November election, amplifying OIA’s social media and creating their own after reviewing OIA’s 2018 Voters Guide. The goal is to promote the election of outdoorists to Congress and governorships across the country.
OIA is asking their members, their brands and customers to amplify, via social media on October 15, messages similar to this one:
• No matter your political stripes, the outdoors brings us together. Pledge to #VoteTheOutdoors this November, and get educated + empowered with @OIA’s Voters Guide: http://oia.outdoorindustry.org/e/51282/2xQkZNF/b48jc2/747591137

“After an election cycle where we have seen unprecedented attacks on our national monuments and a failure by Congress to reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund – the most successful public lands funding program in our nation’s history – the outdoor industry is ready to make our voices heard and help elect Republican and Democratic candidates who will stand up for our public lands and who recognize the power of the outdoor recreation economy,” said Amy Roberts, executive director of OIA. “The 2018 midterms are our moment and we are asking for every outdoor-minded business and individual to help to amplify this message on their brand and personal social media channels on October 15 – and continue a social media storm through Election Day on November 6.”
All year, OIA has been building toward the midterm elections — at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, they launched their Vote the Outdoors campaign that included a first-ever Congressional Scorecard and now they have a new Voters Guide, released on October 1, with information on key races and ballot initiatives across the country. OIA has made endorsements of congressional and gubernatorial candidates who are champions of the outdoors and outdoor recreation economy across the country. These endorsements and OIA’s recommendations on other outdoor related initiatives are included as a voter’s resource in the Voters Guide.
This year, OIA successfully helped get the outdoor industry counted by the Bureau of Economic Analysis as a significant contributor to the national economy – to the tune of 2.2 percent of GDP. Yet, Congress and the Administration have attacked the nation’s public lands by shrinking national monuments and failing to reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund, among much more. The outdoor industry is doing something about it, standing up for our public lands and the sustainable outdoor recreation economy they support.
