Maine Fly Company, a manufacturer of small batch fly fishing rods, has retained Asheville, NC-based Darby Communications as its PR agency of record. Effective immediately, Darby Communications will work with Maine Fly Company to introduce their lineup of unique small batch and custom rods to the broader fly fishing community.
Launched as a passion project in 2018, Maine Fly Company’s mission is crystal clear — put craftsmanship over profit and honor the northeast’s deep fly fishing heritage. Founder Jeff Davis says his obsession with rediscovering the dying art of the rodsmith began after he inherited his late father’s extensive collection of fly fishing equipment. Interest progressed to deep-seated curiosity, and soon this passion project evolved into a sought-after brand known for its high-quality craftsmanship.
Maine Fly Company bucks the modern trend of mass production, sourcing components locally when possible and handcrafting small batch rods with intention, precision, and personality. Each batch is named after well-known Maine waterways and designed with various sizes, weights, actions, grips, and configurations, telling a story all their own. For example, the Kennebec pays homage to the 170-mile renowned trout river. This 9-foot fast action carbon rod exhibits a perfect blend of responsiveness and power featuring unique design elements that draw inspiration from the vintage Maine Guide patch worn by registered guides. The finished product is a work of art, incorporating an earthy pine matte finish, burnt orange wraps, and an all-wood reel seat. Additionally, no rod is recreated until the initial design earns its stripes on the water, ensuring all elements are perfected before it’s ushered into small batch production.
This year Maine Fly Company plans to add three new small batch designs to its collection of hand-built rods and has tapped into Darby Communications’ expertise to introduce the brand and its products to a broader outdoor audience. “As a specialized agency, Darby Communications understands and embodies small batch craftsmanship,” says Jeff Davis. “Through their connections in the outdoor and fishing industries, I’m excited for what’s to come.”
“A handful of our team are New Englanders and for us, Maine represents a truly special place — rugged coastline, untouched wilderness, and a history of craftsmanship,” says Coral Darby, Founder of Darby Communications. “Maine Fly Company is a wonderful representation of all of this, and we’re thrilled to match Jeff’s passion for the outdoors and look forward to heightening the brand’s visibility to a wider audience.”
