EXPED, the Swiss-based outdoor gear brand, has teamed with Myclimate to certify its sleeping mat range carbon-neutral and becomes the first and only one of its kind in the outdoor industry. From 2021 onward, all EXPED mats will be CO2 offset with Myclimate, a Swiss non-profit foundation that promotes measurable climate protection and sustainable development worldwide.
According to Myclimate, for a product to be climate-neutral, all climate-impacting emissions throughout the life cycle of a product are taken into account. This means from the production of raw materials to the use of the product and its subsequent disposal or recycling. The amount of CO2 equivalent (global warming potential) calculated in this way is reduced in high-quality Myclimate carbon offset projects.
“From the beginning, EXPED has always taken care to consider the environment in every transaction, from maintaining a small and nimble physical presence in the form of offices and warehouses to fabrics and materials choices in our gear. With the help of Myclimate, we’ve taken a big step by certifying our carbon footprint in mats. The process has been enlightening and sets us on a course for more of the same in the near future, including the ambitious goal of making EXPED a totally climate neutral company by 2025” said Ted Steudel, president of EXPED USA. “And carbon neutrality is just one facet of EXPED’s sustainability, with fabrics and materials standards also being a strong focus. In the coming years, EXPED will increase its use of recycled fabrics, while maintaining the highest performance standards, which are a hallmark of the brand. EXPED gear is already PFC8-free, RDS certified and IDFL transparent. Another near-term goal is for the product line to become 100% PFC-free. It’s great to see EXPED’s sustainability efforts becoming more formalized and fully realized throughout our operations.”
