Matador Segues into One-Bag Travel with Newest Launch

BOULDER, Colo. (May 21, 2020) – Matador Packable Adventure Gear, the award-winning producer of minimalist travel gear, today introduced the SEG42 One Bag Travel Pack, a 42-liter, carry-on backpack featuring a patented architecture for optimal organization. The innovative segmented design offers access to five external zippered compartments, which allow organization by type, day or activity, and an oversized clamshell pocket allows separation of large items or dirty clothes.

“With the SEG42, we’ve combined the best assets of backpacks, duffle bags and packing cubes to deliver an unprecedented level of organization,” said Chris Clearman, Founder and CEO of Matador. “While packing cubes require rifling through layers of clothes in order to fish something out , the SEG42 has multiple compartments that can be accessed quickly and easily, all from the exterior. It’s 42 liters of pure travel organization.”

In addition to the SEG42’s five main compartments and the full-access clamshell pocket, the backpack offers an external-access padded laptop sleeve and sleek endcap pockets, all featuring water-resistant zippers. The bag can be used as either a backpack or a duffle, with rugged handles on three sides and stowable shoulder straps with an adjustable sternum strap. Burly materials, reinforced construction and aluminum hardware ensure the SEG42 can stand up to the elements, and a UTS coating adds up to 30 percent increased tear strength.

“With airline baggage fees becoming more restrictive, one-bag travel is becoming the norm,” continued Clearman. “The SEG42 makes it easier than ever, and it is a must-have as we segue back into traveling.”

The SEG42 (MSRP: $189.99) is available now at select retailers and online at www.MatadorUp.com.

National Outdoor Groups Release Six “Recreate Responsibly” Tips for Enjoying the Outdoors Safely During COVID-19

As Summer Begins, National Groups Advocate Ways to
Protect Health and Keep Public Lands and Waters Open and Safe

Seattle and Denver – May 21, 2020 – In advance of Memorial Day weekend – the unofficial start of the summer season – a newly formed coalition of outdoor groups created the Recreate Responsibly initiative to share ways for Americans to stay healthy while enjoying public lands, parks, trails, waters, and other outdoor areas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more Americans are spending time outside because of the mental and physical benefits that fresh air and nature provide. As state officials reopen outdoor spaces, people want guidance on how to reduce the risk to themselves and others while enjoying time outside.

Specifically, the Recreate Responsibly initiative is designed to limit new COVID-19 outbreaks and ensure public lands and waters can remain open to the public by providing clear, consistent guidance for individuals, families and communities. The following tips are based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, state and local public health guidelines and recreation experts:

  • Know Before You Go: Check the status of the place you want to visit. If it is closed, don’t go. If it’s crowded, have a plan B.
  • Plan Ahead: Prepare for facilities to be closed, pack lunch and bring essentials like hand sanitizer and a face covering.
  • Stay Close to Home: This is not the time to travel long distances to recreate. Most places are only open for day use.
  • Practice Physical Distancing: Adventure only with your immediate household. Be prepared to cover your nose and mouth and give others space. If you are sick, stay home.
  • Play It Safe: Slow down and choose lower-risk activities to reduce your risk of injury. Search and rescue operations and health care resources are both strained.
  • Leave No Trace: Respect public lands and communities and take all your garbage with you.

“Recreation.gov is often the first stop for visitors as they plan their trips and make reservations on federal land and water locations throughout the country,” said Rick DeLappe, program manager for Recreation.gov. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have supported our participating agencies as they adjust to this quickly evolving situation. As locations begin to reopen and welcome visitors, we feel the Recreate Responsibly coalition is sending the right message at the right time to encourage everyone to safely enjoy our National treasures.”

“People all across the nation are eager to get back outdoors to experience nature, and in this uncertain time, it is the reprieve and little bit of normalcy that many of us need,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “When each person acts in a responsible way, it helps ensure we are able to promote safety and are able to continue welcoming people to our public lands. In Washington state, our recreation community has come together in an extraordinary way to promote responsible recreation. I truly believe this work can serve as a model for the rest of the country and help keep all our communities safe while also allowing us all to enjoy the outdoors.”

“We need nature and the benefits it provides now more than ever. This is especially more important for the many communities that lack the same types and levels of access to the outdoors,” said Maite Arce, president and CEO of Hispanic Access Foundation. “One of the first steps to making the outdoors more inclusive is by translating the information into other languages like Spanish. We can even lessen COVID-19’s effects and the effects of future disasters with holistic conservation policies and safe outdoor access for all.”

“Spending time outdoors has been important for many Americans during this public health crisis,” said Eric Artz, president and CEO of REI Co-op. “As our public lands and waters reopen, we’ll all benefit from clear, easy-to-follow guidance on how to recreate responsibly – whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a family heading to your local park. At REI, we’re grateful that the outdoor community is coming together so quickly to simplify and amplify tips for ensuring we all recreate with health and safety in mind. This is the type of collaboration that will help keep our public spaces open.”

“No matter how you like to recreate, we are all united by the love we share for our public lands and waters,” said Adam Cramer, executive director of Outdoor Alliance. “We have a shared responsibility to not only care for these places but to care for our fellow citizens, and these guidelines help show the way.”

“The outdoor industry understands why Americans are clamoring for the many health benefits of getting outside, and we are hard at work to ensure they can access the outdoors safely,” said Lise Aangeenbrug, Outdoor Industry Association executive director. “We strongly believe that ‘together we are a force’ should be the motto for protecting the outdoors, and it is great to see so many national groups come together to shape the conversation about responsible recreation during this public health crisis.”

“Healthy outdoor recreation activities like boating provide one of the safest atmospheres for Americans and their families to spend time relaxing and playing together,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “Whether you’re boating, swimming or fishing on a lake, bay or ocean, it is up to everyone to recreate responsibly so we can enjoy our beloved pastimes this Memorial Day and beyond.”

New Washington Outdoor Coalition Shares Six Important Tips for How to #RecreateResponsibly this Memorial Day

More than 50 organizations agree on practical advice for enjoying the outdoors during the pandemic to protect Washingtonians

During the global COVID-19 pandemic, spending time outside has become of even greater importance to Washingtonians because of the mental and physical benefits fresh air and nature provide. As Gov. Jay Inslee re-opens state lands and waters, people are excited, but we need a shared set of steps for reducing the risk to ourselves and others while enjoying nature. The newly formed Washington Recreate Responsibly Coalition brings together more than 50 organizations to simplify and amplify that guidance — to make recreating responsibly easier to remember, follow and share. And the work of the Washington coalition has begun to help shape the national conversation.

Brought together under the leadership of Washington Trails Association, outdoor retailer REI and state land managers, the Recreate Responsibly Coalition includes government agencies, nonprofits and outdoor businesses inspired by a love of the outdoors and a desire to help people safely experience the benefits of nature while ensuring that our public lands stay open.

“It became clear pretty quickly that there were a lot of similar conversations happening. It made sense for us all to come together to agree on clear and consistent guidelines that everyone could use,” said Andrea Imler, Washington Trails Association.

The result is six quick tips to help reduce the spread of the virus, based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), public health guidelines and recreation experts. Whether you are hiking, biking, paddling or riding (a horse or a dirtbike), these tips offer advice for how to recreate responsibly during this public health crisis. From what to consider as you plan your adventure, to how far you should travel — the Recreate Responsibly tips provide appropriate guidance.

Six tips to help you #RecreateResponsibly

  • 1. Know Before You Go: Check the status of the place you want to visit. If it is closed, don’t go. If it’s crowded, have a plan B.

  • 2. Plan Ahead: Prepare for facilities to be closed, pack lunch and bring essentials like hand sanitizer and a face covering.

  • 3. Stay Close to Home: This is not the time to travel long distances to recreate. Most places are only open for day use.

  • 4. Practice Physical Distancing: Adventure only with your immediate household. Be prepared to cover your nose and mouth and give others space. If you are sick, stay home.

  • 5. Play It Safe: Slow down and choose lower-risk activities to reduce your risk of injury. Search and rescue operations and health care resources are both strained.

  • 6. Leave No Trace: Respect public lands and communities and take all your garbage with you.

“The fact that the statewide Recreate Responsibly Coalition formed so quickly is testament to our shared value of public lands,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “Here in King County, we treasure our parks, trails, and wilderness, and as our residents get outside to enjoy these special places, we encourage everyone to follow the Coalition’s six simple tips for recreating responsibly.”

“As Washingtonians, we continue to fight to slow the spread of COVID-19. As a community that treasures the outdoors, we are so profoundly grateful to get back outside. It is one small step back to normalcy for all of us,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “Due to our shared sacrifice and the heroic work of our first responders, doctors and nurses, we can now begin reconnecting with nature again. However, we all must take the proper precautions to keep our communities, our families and ourselves safe from the virus so we can continue to enjoy the healing powers of nature.”

The coalition realized that harmonizing these simple guidelines would increase the understanding and awareness of these shared best practices across the state, and potentially beyond. REI, one of the founding members of the Recreate Responsibly Coalition, has a reach beyond the state’s boundaries and quickly saw the potential to channel this energy nationwide.

“Spending time outdoors has been important for many Americans during this public health crisis,” said Eric Artz, President and CEO of REI Co-op. “The #RecreateResponsibly coalition is an inspiring example of what’s possible in this state when organizations come together with a shared passion and a clear goal. By simplifying and amplifying guidance on how to recreate reasonably, we are keeping ourselves healthy, supporting our land managers and working together to keep our public lands open. This is a collaborative model we hope to see take off at the national level and in other states.”

Building on the idea that simple, consistent advice would be good for everyone, REI, Outdoor Alliance and the Outdoor Industry Association have convened a national group of partners interested in helping to ensure this important conversation expanded nationally. This national Recreate Responsibly Coalition is now 18 strong and evolving into a #RecreateResponsibly movement with a website at www.recreateresponsibly.org to share the guidelines and other resources. The group will launch an awareness campaign on Thursday, May 21, just in time for Memorial Day weekend — encouraging folks across the country to keep these six easy tips in mind to recreate responsibly while enjoying their summer adventures.

The Coalition recognizes this is a first collective step. As more people get outside, and as governments update their COVID-19 policies, the guidance may need to be updated. In addition, different activities— climbing, off-roading, trail maintenance and restoration, for instance — may require additional protocols. The Coalition hopes to synthesize and amplify that additional guidance for the benefit of the broader community, too.

The reality is that the impacts of this pandemic on recreation and public lands will be felt for months, and maybe years, to come. The quick, collective response of the outdoor community shows how a love of nature can bring us together.

“Recreating responsibly helps us care for each other, and at the same time, take greater care of our outdoor spaces. It is thrilling to see the work the Recreate Responsibly Coalition is doing extend across the nation,” reflects Jon Hoekstra, Executive Director, Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.

It has become clear that natural spaces and the ability to enjoy them are not mere nice-to-haves. Whether you are hiking, paddling, riding or walking in your local park, access to nature is a key component to our nation’s health and well-being.

Long term, the Recreate Responsibly Coalition hopes that this growing recognition of the value of time spent outside will translate to an increased desire to be strong stewards for public lands well into the future.

Experts Predict U.S. Mosquito Population Boom for the 2020 Summer Season

BEDFORD, Mass, May 21, 2020 — Above normal temperatures and precipitation this year have entomologists forecasting a heavier surge in mosquitoes this summer for the eastern half of the United States.

“Even with the recent polar jet stream dropping snow throughout the Northeast, summer is still off to a bad start when it comes to mosquitoes,” said John Hainze, Ph.D., and president of BioOpus, LLC. “Overall, the warmer than average winter and wetter spring have created an early population spike for mosquitoes.”

The Northeast had its seventh warmest winter at 4.1 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, according to the Northeast Region Climate Center at Cornell University. This winter was among the 10 warmest for all 12 Northeast states. The Northeast also experienced 113 percent of normal precipitation during winter, ranking in the wettest third of all years.

In December, the Midwest region saw temperatures climb 7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal while January was up to 13 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal. Winter precipitation was 102 percent of average.

More Rain and Heat Means More Mosquitoes

“When it comes to predicting mosquito population, temperature and rainfall are two major predictors,” said Hainze. “This year’s warmer temperatures and increased rainfall created the perfect recipe for mosquitoes to get a head start on breeding.”

With scientists forecasting increased summer heat and moisture in certain regions, Hainze believes most of the U.S. east of the Mississippi River will see the mosquito population thrive and rapidly expand.

The Climate Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook for June through August is predicting 33-40 percent probability for above mean precipitation levels for the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast regions.

The NOAA is also forecasting hotter than normal summer temperatures for the eastern Midwest, Southeast, and Atlantic coast with a 50-70 percent probability for above mean temperatures.

More Mosquitoes Meet More People

Amid ongoing concerns around the growing COVID-19 pandemic, more people are spending time in private backyards, patios or decks, local public parks, or private balconies, according to a recent survey conducted by Thermacell® Repellents, Inc.

The Thermacell May 2020 Outdoor Behavior Survey polled 500 participants in the U.S. to learn more about outdoor behaviors and activities in light of the current Coronavirus pandemic.

“As people are turning to the outdoors to escape these troubled times, they are unfortunately running into a period of increased mosquito activity,” said Kyle Adelman, senior marketing manager at Thermacell. “Compared to this time last year, we’re experiencing record sales and growth with our mosquito repellent products.”

Thermacell, a leading manufacturer of area mosquito repellents, revealed that nearly half (48 percent) of Americans surveyed indicated they are spending more or significantly more time outdoors. Yet 77 percent reported having mosquitoes interrupt an outdoor activity.

More than one third (38 percent) of the respondents said that mosquitoes annoy them most during the summer, followed by humidity (24 percent) and heat (16 percent).

Pleasant summer weather drives more people to spend their time outdoors. That same weather, unfortunately, also drives dramatic increases in the mosquito population. Keep summertime activities free from nuisance mosquitoes with a protection solution that includes area repellents for when you’re stationary and topical while you’re on the go.

Additionally, an updated visual appearance to both home pages showcases the brands in a more modern light, reflective of the brand’s premium products and presentation of brand messaging.

“The improvements made to both the Primus and Brunton websites are a direct result of making our customers experience a better one,” says Chris Clark, director of sales and marketing for Primus. “With VentureWeb’s expertise in building engaging web platforms that provide easy and intuitive navigation, we’re proud of the new websites that complement our brand vision and showcase our products in a way that is reflective of the value they bring to our customers outdoor experiences.”
