As a first step to measuring the overall contributions of our industry to the gross domestic product, OIA and many of our member companies recommended that the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), working closely with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, and natural resource agencies within the federal government, begin to report on the employment and economic activity associated with the outdoor recreation industry.
Secretary Jewell recently announced that the land management agencies will begin this work with a one-time, national study. OIA and many of our partners are working on the Recreation’s Economic Contributions (REC) Act legislation to institutionalize this annual study beyond this administration. Additionally, the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Outdoor REC Act, legislation that directs the Secretary of Commerce, through the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), to “conduct an assessment and analysis of the outdoor recreation economy of the United States.”
