Sustainable Globetrotting: OIA Around The World

Travel vicariously with our Sustainable Business Innovation team, which is on the road and in the skies and on the rivers and on the trails this week in India for the Sustainable Apparel Coalition annual meetings.

On May 14, Beth Jensen and Nikki Hodgson set off for a whirlwind tour around the globe. In 15 days, they’ll travel more than 20,000 miles to delve deep into the global textile supply chain and our modern climate reality.

They started in Indore, India, where they visited Pratibha Syntex, a vertically integrated, sustainability-oriented knitted textile manufacturer that makes Fair Trade certified garments as well as organic cotton and recycled-content garments.

Then they were off to Colombo, Sri Lanka, where they visited MAS Holdings with a team from Lululemon.

They returned to India for the Sustainable Apparel Coalition annual meeting in Bangalore, where Beth led a session on microfiber shedding—a hot topic lately among apparel companies and watch groups, and she hosted a discussion on the industry’s leadership of Higg Index adoption.

When the meetings conclude, they’ll board a plane to Frankfurt to Denver to Telluride, where they’ll meet with industry leaders to discuss climate change.

Thanks to the magic of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you can follow along on their journey to India, Sri Lanka and Telluride. If you’re not following them on social media

Indore. We finally made it out of a long cycle of airports and planes and more airports and planes and now we’re comfortably situated in a sea of honking horns and motorbikes. I love this chaos. I love the soothing sway of being immersed in a crowd. I can hardly keep my eyes open, but I am fighting sleep. I’d rather slip out the front gate and wander these side streets instead.

First full day in India: flight from Delhi to Indore; a bit of gym time with a disproportionate amount of sweat lost; and a little tour of the city, including the first blonde-person-sore-thumb selfie requests I’ve received in quite a while, outside Lal Bagh Palace. Factory visit #1 tomorrow. #OIASBIontheroad with @nikkitravels and #mecstaffer @jmertens31 A post shared by Beth Jensen (@bethejensen) on

Indore Day 2: I had three platefuls of food at breakfast. I regret nothing except that I couldn’t find room for a fourth. Off to do a factory visit! So excited! 🤓

A stormy welcome to Sri Lanka for our second factory visit tomorrow – we managed to land just in time for the first day of monsoon season and I have “the weather started getting rough…” on repeat in my head #OIASBIontheroad @outdoorindustry #howitsmade #sustainableapparel A post shared by Beth Jensen (@bethejensen) on

Fortunate this morning to tag along with colleagues from @lululemon to visit a preschool in Sri Lanka – the facility was created via a partnership with @masintimo and provides child care and counseling services for parents who work at the nearby apparel factory. Once again reminded of why I work in this field…

Great day of sustainability meetings yesterday with the team from @mas_holdings. Thanks for all the hospitality! A post shared by Beth Jensen (@bethejensen) on

Things that make me tear up: • Disney movies • That Reunion ad by Google India • Tiny, happy humans playing and learning • This moment yesterday visiting a preschool — the result of a partnership between @lululemon and @mas_holdings. So honored to get to see this school and talk with all the people who made it a reality. PS I’m not crying. It’s just the humidity. In my eyes.

Notes from a morning in Bangalore: • • Say yes. Look up. Wander aimlessly. Follow a stranger’s footsteps through an unknown place. You never know what secrets they might share. You may find yourself standing in the middle of a chaotic city staring up at a canopy of trees — suddenly a swish of outstretched wings, an explosion of leaves. Something takes flight. Check your expectations. It’s not what you might think. It’s more beautiful than that. You are itching to write it all out. But you have shuffled quietly through the leaves and sworn your secrecy. ———————————————————— Leaning out a tuk tuk, look up. Again and again and again. Look up, look up, look up.

Morning run snapshots. I probably need one of these for around Boulder. Do you think it could tow a horse trailer? A post shared by Nikki Hodgson (@nikkitravels) on

Yeah. I’m nerdy. I know. But I am super excited about everything on this table (especially the coffee) and even more excited to be at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition meeting, kicking off two days of inspiring conversations with great people working on big challenges, committed to big changes. 👊🤓 A post shared by Nikki Hodgson (@nikkitravels) on
