Eco Index Named One of “Ten Most Hopeful Green Business Stories of 2010” by GreenBiz.com

Jan 6, 2011

The outdoor industry has been recognized by GreenBiz.com for its leadership in advancing sustainable business practices in 2010 via the groundbreaking, collaboratively-developed OIA Eco Index product environmental footprinting tool.

As stated by Joel Makower, Chairman and Executive Editor of GreenBiz Group, “Transparency doesn’t come without a great deal of investigation and quantification, the metrics of which are still in their infancy. Those metrics took a leap forward, at least for one industry, with the emergence of the Eco Index.”  He continues, “This is a terrific example of industry collaboration to solve collective challenges and get all players speaking the same language and using the same yardsticks.”

OIA launched the Eco Index in August 2010 and is currently being piloted by more than 100 companies both within and beyond the outdoor industry.

The Eco Index was one of just ten stories selected by Makower — from a pool of over 2,000 published on GreenBiz.com in 2010 — as the year’s top significant developments in the world of sustainable business.

“Inclusion on this list is an honor and is a testament to the commitment the outdoor industry, specifically the OIA Eco Working Group, has shown to making significant improvement in environmental practices throughout the supply chain and around the world,” said Jill Dumain, Director of Environmental Strategy, Patagonia and Chair of the OIA Sustainability Advisory Council. “Our industry is being recognized for its thought leadership in the area of product sustainability, and the collaborative process used to build the Eco Index can be held up as a model for future initiatives.”

GreenBiz.com, the flagship website of GreenBiz Group, focuses on providing sustainability information and resources to companies of all sizes and promotes environmental responsibility as a way to support profitable business practices.
