Events by the Numbers

Over the 2017 Memorial Day Weekend, leaders from across the outdoor industry gathered to explore the challenges related to climate change and to help define tangible business actions, both on the advocacy and mitigation fronts. Ultimately many attendees signed the first-ever CEO Pledge and began taking meaningful action in the fight against climate change. Learn more about 2018’s Climate Leadership Summit.

Outdoor University, your favorite way to take a break from the show floor and learn something new, presented sessions on everything from outdoor advocacy to trends in marketing and design at Outdoor Retailer Summer and Winter Markets.

At the official kickoff to Outdoor Retailer, former Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, Montana Governor Steve Bullock and The North Face athletes Alex Honnold and Cedar Wright showed us why the protection of public lands, the backbone of our $887 billion industry, is everyone’s business.

In a fitting farewell, we lived up our last visit to Salt Lake City and showed our continued commitment to the state’s public lands by leading a peaceful and powerful march to and rally on the capitol steps. During the final Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, nearly 3,000 people marched to the state capitol to show their support for our public lands. Spirits were high, the celebration was great and the goodbyes were heartfelt. Watch the video.

In April, we hosted our largest-ever Capitol Summit in Washington, D.C., bringing 130 industry executives to our nation’s capital. We had more than 100 meetings with members of Congress and senior administration officials, including senior White House advisors to the president.

Over 100 outdoor industry sustainability professionals convened to address important industry sustainability topics like microfibers, flame retardants, circular economy and to learn more about topics like sustainable packaging, operationalizing climate change solutions, ethical rubber sourcing at our Sustainability Insights Conference. The Higg Index industry benchmarking results were also released during this time. Learn more here.

2017 was the second year of the Skip Yowell Future Leadership Academy. 30 outstanding and committed emerging leaders from across the outdoor industry completed the second annual OIA Skip Yowell Future Leadership Academy, a six-month immersive learning experience. The goal of the program is the prepare, unite and give voice to the next generation of outdoor industry leaders. Over the course of the program, these individuals received personal and professional development opportunities that included education about important outdoor industry issues, leadership training and mentoring from industry veterans, and, of course, fun.
