Nick Symmonds Announces Plan to Climb Mount Everest

EUGENE, Ore. (May 1, 2018) — This morning at 8 AM Pacific, recently retired professional runner, Nick Symmonds, announced his intention to climb to the top of the world. Symmonds, a 2x Olympian in the sport of Track & Field, published his plan to climb the 7 Summits, the tallest mountain on every continent. This round the world trip will culminate in an attempt to stand atop Mount Everest.

Symmonds, who also serves as the CEO of the energy supplement company Run Gum, made public his plans with a new website, He kicks off his worldwide tour on June 8th when he flies to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent of Africa.

“Since I was a boy I’ve dreamed of climbing these mountains,” said Symmonds, who achieved the rank of Eagle as a Boy Scout in Boise’s Troop 94. “For nearly two decades I put those dreams on hold to see how fast I could be on the track. It is now time to go back and revist those goals.”

Symmonds has created to help his friends, family, and fans follow him along his journey. The website explains that prior to 1953 no human had ever summited Everest or broken 4 minutes for the mile. Scientists believed that these feats were so impossible that merely attempting them could kill a person.

If successful on Everest, Symmonds, who has a personal best in the mile of 3:56, would be the first sub 4 minute miler to successfully climb Everest.
