September 26, 2002 (BOULDER, CO) — Outdoor Industry Association today announced an exclusive new resource for Climate Action Corps members to measure their company’s carbon footprint. The guidance – “Measuring GHG Emissions from Purchased Goods & Services (Scope 3 – Category 1) using Higg Tools” – is a step-by-step manual on how to use the Higg Index suite of tools to calculate emissions from a company’s purchased goods and services. Purchased goods and services include the embedded emissions in finished products from raw material extraction to final assembly and is typically the largest source of emissions for brands.

The guide is presented in levels, and with each progressing level, companies have access to more information which allows the use of more detailed tools, and results in a more representative carbon footprint for each company.

“When we announced our industry’s goal to become climate positive by 2030, we knew it was ambitious. So we’ve worked hard to provide our members with resources and support to guide each step of the journey,” said Sarah Rykal, Senior Manager of Climate Action Corps for Outdoor Industry Association. “This new guidance will help Corps members measure their emissions more efficiently and accurately, and ultimately enable them to reach the climate positive summit faster. But it will take all of us to protect the outdoor experience upon which our industry depends. We hope this additional guidance will attract other companies to join the Corps. We have the tools to make our goal reality.”

The OIA Climate Action Corps team worked with third-party experts, an Advisory Council, and Higg to assemble the step-by-step guide. Higg brings together decades of experience in sustainability, technology, and consumer goods to provide brands, retailers, and manufacturers an integrated digital platform to accelerate progress. This platform, combined with OIA’s expertise, collaboration and resources, enables Climate Action Corps Members to make progress faster on their science-based reduction targets and climate action goals.

The new guidance is available to the Climate Action Corps beginning today and will be accompanied by an upcoming training webinar. Climate Action Corps members are also provided with an array of resources and guidance to help them on their climate action journeys, including a user-friendly guidebook, 1:1 support from GHG emissions specialists, and a network of peers to share resources and best practices with.
