Touted as a solution to minimize fossil fuel dependency, renewable materials are increasing in demand globally. Sourced from plants and animals that can be replenished in a human’s lifetime, renewable raw materials range from cotton to palm oil and offer a multitude of benefits. However, when impacts on land use, biodiversity & nearby communities are considered, they are not always a more sustainable option. Thus, how these materials are created (i.e. agricultural practices) & the transparency of these supply chains matter. This session will provide an introduction into renewable plant-based materials and how the outdoor industry can leverage existing efforts to source renewable materials that are both traceable and sustainable.
