Help Make the Brand Module better!

      • If you completed a 2015 module, please take 10-15 minutes to complete this brief survey to let us know where you’re at with your action planning, as well as contribute feedback to inform potential updates to the Brand Module.
      • Your answers will help the Sustainable Apparel Coalition evaluate needs for possible updates to the Brand Module. This survey is due July 29th, 2016. Please submit only one per company. If you are also a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and already submitted your feedback, simply take a few minutes to answer the first 3 questions.

Public Consultation on Draft ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines

Higg Index Updates: Benchmarking: Find us on higg.org! We are so excited about the progress the outdoor industry has made on completing and posting Higg Index 2015 Brand Modules, and soon we’ll be compiling an anonymous industry-wide benchmark based on results to share at Summer Market (during the August 1 SWG meeting). This will allow us to get an overall picture of the industry’s strengths and opportunities – as well as allow you to compare your results against the industry average. We’ll be building the benchmark based on the outdoor industry companies that are connected to OIA’s profile on Higg.org – this will allow us to create an outdoor-industry relevant data set. So, please visit Higg.org to ensure each of your brands are connected to OIA’s profile (in the Connections tab). Note: Your data will be kept strictly confidential, and individual company results will never be shared. Higg Index Updates: Benchmarking, Public Commitment Statement, and Free Workshop at Outdoor Retailer

      • Find us on higg.org! So, please visit Higg.orgto ensure each of your brands are connected to OIA’s profile (in the Connections tab). Note: Your data will be kept strictly confidential, and individual company results will never be shared. Read more here. (https://oia-swg.imeetcentral.com/higgindex/forum/)
      • 35 companies have publicly committed to using the Higg Index – have you? To date, thirty-five companies have signed onto the Higg Index Public Commitment Statement, helping drive widespread adoption of the Higg Index and better business practices throughout the outdoor industry and publicly highlighting your company’s sustainability leadership Deadline to sign is June 30. Review the letter and commitment statement here and if your company is ready to sign on, please email Beth Jensen or Nikki Hodgson to be added to the list of signatories.
      • New to the Higg Index? Join this FREE workshopthe afternoon of August 2 at ORSM to better understand how the Higg Index can help you drive improvements for your brand, products and supply chain. You’ll leave with a jump-start on data collection and be better equipped to engage your internal teams on sustainability.

Textile Exchange Releases Responsible Wool Standard:

The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) has been finalized and is available for certification. Developed through an International Working Group (IWG) in an open, multi-stakeholder process, the Standard provides the industry with a tool to ensure sheep are raised with respect to their Five Freedoms, prohibits mulesing, and includes strict guidelines on other practices such as tail docking, shearing, and on-farm slaughter. Farms will be required to have strict management practices in place for the protection of land used for raising sheep. For more information, visit http://responsiblewool.org/

Join Pearl Izumi, REI, Keen and other outdoor brands in posting your 2015 Higg Index Brand Module

This summer, we’ll have our first-ever outdoor industry benchmark on brand social and environmental performance using the Higg Index. If you have posted your 2015 Brand Module, congratulations! You are already taking steps toward improvement and contributing to a more valuable industry benchmark.

Why should I post my module? How will my data be used?

Read answers to these important FAQs, here.

      What’s the latest?

      • 52 outdoor industry brands have Higg.org accounts
      • 40 Brand Modules are in progress or completed
      • 18 Brand Modules have been posted

Our goal is for 100% of SWG brand members to have posted a module. To meet our goal, we need all brands to post their Brand Module(s) by May 31st, 2015! On May 31st, the 2015 Brand Module cycle ends and the system will no longer allow you to start a 2015 module.

      What’s next?

Join our webinar on May 25th at 9:00 AM PST: How to Analyze + Act on your Brand Module Results, where we’ll feature a variety of ways brands are getting the most out of the Brand Module, including sample results formats, internal communication tools and action plans.

Questions? Need additional support to complete or post your brand module? Contact higgsupport@outdoorindustry.org.

What to say when someone asks, “seems like there are a lot of tools for apparel and footwear – what about equipment and hardgoods?”

Working on it. Earlier this month, Julie and Betsy of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition provided an update to the Equipment Working Group on the progress of the Higg Index Product Module – now called the Development and Design Module (DDM) – which will replace the Rapid Design Module moving forward. Following this call, the Equipment Working Group is reconvening to align on next steps, including:

      • Participation in the Higg DDM pilot and mapping the data gaps for hardgoods.
      • Re-convening on the priority list of known data gaps for hardgoods, and whether any LCA data exists that could be integrated into the Higg DDM.
      • Potential modification of other tools or efforts specific to hardgoods, pending interest by OIA SWG members.

Want to get in on the action? Contact Beth or Nikki.

Looking for an animal welfare policy?

Fill out the Doodle poll with your availability for a small group call to review the existing animal welfare guidelines and work through drafting an animal welfare policy, similar to the OIA code of conduct, that is ready and available for widespread adoption and use.

When your coworker asks what you learned at the OIA Sustainability Insights Conference

Don’t sit near the front. Beth and Nikki might call on you. The OIA Marketing and Communications team asked a few SWG supply chain experts to offer their top highlights from Nike’s SIX (System Innovation Experiment) game. If you missed the chance to experience SIX at ORSM, it’s not too late to register for Rendezvous in Seattle.

What to do when you need to discuss tent flammability standards…

Join the industry’s Flame Retardant Task Force. There is now a workspace on Central Desktop entirely dedicated to Flame Retardants. Yes, an entire workspace!  Now, take a deep breath and calm down, then contact Beth or Nikki to learn more or to be added to this workspace.

      The what index?

The Higg Index Adoption Task Force for the outdoor industry has put together a Higg Index FAQ sheet that provides quick answers to the what, who, why, and how. Have ideas around other educational and/or training resources for the industry around the Higg Index? Let us know.

      Can we TiVo that?

Anne Gillespie of Textile Exchange provided a great update on the progress of the TE Responsible Wool Standard last week. Missed it? We recorded it. Review the “Responsible Wool Standard Briefing Call” here.

When you go to Yelp something and there aren’t any reviews…

Have a few minutes? Help review the Supply Chain Mapping Guide. Its objective is to provide the industry with common language and reference points as well as guidance in moving back from Tier 1 – Tier 4. A small team drafted the content, our marketing and communications team worked their magic, and now we need some extra help reviewing both the content and the layout. Let us know what you think. Email all feedback to Nikki by Friday, October 9th.

      Chemicals Management Tools for Suppliers

Industry Campaigns: PETA attacks Ovis 21 and Patagonia

The week of August 10, PETA published video footage captured at farms in the Ovis 21 network – Patagonia’s wool sourcing partner – depicting disturbing treatment of sheep.

(You do not need to be a member of the MTWG or Wool Task Force to attend this briefing.)

Legs & Regs: County-Level Chemical Bans in New York State

In recent months, chemicals bans by several New York State counties have emerged, all within the context of children’s toys and clothing:

      • Rockland County, effective October 2015 – includes Mercury, Antimony, Arsenic, Cobalt, Lead, Cadmium, and Benzene.
      • Westchester County, effective May 2016 – matches the Rockland County list, plus Formaldehyde.
      • Albany County, effective June 2016 (likely) – matches the Rockland County list.
      • Suffolk County, effective July 2016 – matches the Rockland County list, minus Benzene; includes specific thresholds (Mercury, Antimony, Arsenic, and Cobalt at 40ppm; Lead at 100/90ppm; Cadmium at 75ppm).

A lawsuit was filed against Albany County in July, with other action being considered. OIA will keep you apprised as we hear of further developments.
