OIA's Sustainable Business Priorities in 2017

If you think the past 10 years brought progress for sustainable business initiatives, wait till you see what's coming as we move from assessment to action.

Ten years ago the OIA Sustainability Working Group got its start at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market when a few companies sat down together to figure out how they could best ensure and continually improve the high environmental and social responsibility standards that consumers have come to expect of the outdoor industry. 

Over the years, that initial group of a few companies has grown into a few hundred strong as we continue to navigate some of the tougher supply chain questions. With a solid method of assessment in place (the Higg Index), the OIA Sustainability Working Group is continuing its collaborative efforts to identify solutions and inspire action.  

The OIA Sustainable Business Innovation team is here to support those efforts. Our goal for 2017 is to be a thought leader in sustainable commercial practices and innovation and to help all OIA members credibly demonstrate a reduced impact on the environment. Here is how we plan to achieve those goals:  

Sustainable business is about asking, “How can we do this better?” It’s about working together on shared challenges and asking the questions that drive innovation, environmental responsibility and positive contributions to the communities from which we source, in which we manufacture and to which we sell. OIA has always been proud to support that work and help companies answer those questions. We could not be prouder of the industry’s leadership around sustainability, and in 2017 we look forward to continuing to encourage and promote those efforts.
