If your company is new to the concept of benchmarking and measuring the sustainability impacts of your products, or you are generally looking to build the sustainability capacity within your organization, this is a good place to start.

You can start by looking at our guidelines, which are designed to get you thinking about the various components of sustainability and building your sustainability capacity.

No previous environmental and sustainability knowledge or experience is needed to use the guidelines.

The guidelines will help you examine sustainability aspects throughout your supply chain:

  • Product Design
  • Materials
  • Packaging
  • Manufacturing & Assembly
  • Facilities
  • Transportation
  • Use & Service
  • End of Life

This will get you thinking about — and even altering — aspects of your design and production processes. Then you can decide when you’re ready to dive in deeper and start using a quantifiable index tool to measure your product sustainability.

The guidelines are a non-scored, qualitative set of principles and management practices for each product lifecycle stage as well as for manufacturing facilities and the product design process. The Guidelines serve as a stepping stone into the more complex Apparel, Footwear, and Equipment Indexes, but they can also be used as a standalone resource within your company. Reading through the Guidelines will provide a good orientation to the Index structure and content.
